All the eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo and he delivered. The Portuguese striker scored a brace during the 5-0 win for Portugal against Uzbekistan in Houston, putting themselves in a strong position in Group K after their opening draw with DR Congo.
The pressure was on Ronaldo, especially after a disappointing debut and the goals scored by Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland on Tuesday. After finding the net twice against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo officially became the first player in soccer history to score in six different editions of the World Cup.
The Portuguese captain led the way with a first-half brace, while Nuno Mendes added a stunning free-kick before an unfortunate own goal by goalkeeper Abduvakhid Nematov and the late goal scored by Rafael Leao completed a dominant 5-0 victory for Portugal.
This was an important win for Portugal, waiting for the match between Colombia and DR Congo, as the side managed by Roberto Martinez are now leading the standings of Group K with four points.
