Germany got off to a slow start against Ivory Coast, but in the second consecutive game, super sub Denis Undav scored from the bench, leading to a 2-1 victory in World Cup group stage play. He got his first goal in the 68th minute to bring the match level and then brought the house down in Toronto in the 94th minute of play with a goal assisted by Felix Nmecha. The victory officially puts Germany into the round of 32, and they could become group winners Saturday night if Ecuador fail to beat Curacao.
Ivory Coast manager Emerse Fae pushed the right buttons from the start of the match with five changes, helping spark Ivory Coast into a fast start. Germany had no answers for Yan Diomande as the talented 19-year-old danced past their defense to help setup captian Franck Kessie's opening goal, but Ivory Coast weren't able to find a second, leaving the door open in the match.
Despite losing center back Nico Schlotterbeck to an ankle injury in the first half, if you leave a door open for Germany, they will find a way. Leroy Sane still struggled, Joshua Kimmich was unable to keep up with Diomande, and in the end, none of it mattered as Undav had his first goal involvement from the bench, a World Cup record.
After winning 7-1 in their first match of the tournament over Curacao, Ivory Coast were Germany's first challenge of the tournament, and while they may have won, it's a game that shows just how flawed Julian Nagelsmann's side is. Answers could be there as if Undav comes into the starting XI, but with Jamal Musiala as the 10, it's a tough change to make.
Missing most of the season with a broken leg, Musiala is a talented young player, but he was unable to impact the game while Undav and Kai Havertz interchange well. Due to this victory, the highest that Ivory Coast can finish in the group is second, but facing Curacao on the final day and just ending a win there thanks to having the tiebreaker over Ecuador, they'll feel confident about doing that. If Ecuador does defeat Curacao on Saturday, Germany won't be able to win the group until the final day, during which they'll need to make sure they don't lose to the South American side.
That match will be a change fpor Nagelsmann to tweak things because, as things stand, this team will get knocked out when facing a balanced squad with depth. Germany are a side that expects to be there at the end of the World Cup, but when they've failed to win one since 2014, tweaks will be needed.
