Real Madrid opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win over Inter on Tuesday, their two early goals providing a much-needed security blanket despite an uneven performance against the Italian champions.
Inter started the game with intensity but were also mistake-prone, affording Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde easy opportunities to score and going down 2-0 by the 22nd minute. Real Madrid picked up the tempo after the fact, but were outpossessed and outshot by Inter over the course of the game, the visitors' reward finally coming in the 77th minute when Carlos Augusto pulled one back. It was not enough to inspire a comeback, though, Inter failing to make their way out of the hole they dug themselves into early in the match.
City's win was a slow burn but not for a lack of trying, their efforts were eventually rewarded with an Erling Haaland brace at Porto. Haaland's second-half display was an antidote to Diogo Costa's first-half work, the Porto goalkeeper making several key saves before the break in the hopes of keeping City at bay.
Real Betis' trip to Lille served as the most entertaining game of the day, the hosts getting off to a strong start as Ethan Mbappe connected with Ayase Ueda for the opening goal. Betis defender Marc Bartra, though, scored an equalizer and then did so again after Lille restored their lead. The visitors finally got ahead with a Troy Parrott goal, while things went from bad to worse as Mbappe picked up a red card for an elbow to the face of Betis' Natan.
Serhou Guirassy is the scorer of an unlikely hattrick -- Villarreal earn a corner and at the end, the ball comes off the Borussia Dortmund's face and lands in the back of the net. The visitors are still down 3-2 with very little time left on the clock, though they will go home with the funniest consolation goal.
Marc Bartra was the unlikely scorer of a brace today but Erling Haaland bagging two goals is much more predictable. He has a second as Manchester City take a 2-0 lead over Porto in stoppage time, a hard-fought but well-earned win almost guaranteed now.
Borussia Dortmund earn a spotkick and just five minutes after scoring his first goal of the day, Serhou Guirassy has completed a brace. It's 3-1 to Dortmund now in the 85th minute, the two-goal cushion probably enough to see things against Villarreal.
Borussia Dortmund earn a freekick and though Villarreal are untroubled by the hosts' first go, they spring back into action. Fabio Silva makes a run down the right flank and he then makes an all-important cross across the goal line, the ever-reliable Serhou Guirassy finishing things off for a 2-1 lead in the 80th minute.
At long last, Inter have something to show for their efforts at the Bernabeu. They make their way towards goal down the flanks and in the end, Lautaro Martinez comes up with a cross to set up Carlos Augusto for the finish. Real Madrid's two goal cushion was enough for the hosts to pick up their intensity levels and they have since tried to match Inter's attacking urgency but the visitors, outside of their two very sloppy moments in the first half, have been intent on getting back into the game. The deficit is now 2-1 after 77 minutes, creating a fascinating scenario to close out the game.
Set pieces seem to be a common theme today in the Champions League and Villarreal appear to have taken note. Santiago Mourino bags their equalizer at Borussia Dortmund off a set piece in the 66th minute, giving each side 20 minutes and change to find a winner and pick up a valuable three points.
Borussia Dortmund said attacker Konstantinos Karetsas is on his way to the hospital after dealing with circulatory problems that caused him to come off in the 27th minute from Ethan Nwaneri. He is "doing well under the circumstances" but there is otherwise no update on his condition.
The action is non-stop in Lille, where Ethan Mbappe gets a red card, an easy decision for the referee to make after eblowing Real Betis' Natan. Things just keep getting worse for Lille, who have relinquished the lead twice and are now down a goal and a man.
The last goalless game of the day is goalless no more -- even if the circumstances are a little bit awkward, depending on who you ask. Villarreal's Renato Veiga scores an own goal to give Borussia Dortmund the lead, a nice reward for the hosts after dominating much of the match.
For the first time today, Real Betis are in the lead against Lille. Rodrigo Riquelme combines with Troy Parrott, who comes up with a fantastic finish from an angle. They're up 3-2 after 53 minutes.
Unlikely as it may be, Real Betis center back Marc Bartra has a brace. The goal once again comes off a set piece, Isco's delivery off a freekick from the right side of the pitch ensuring the ball would head towards the goal line. Bartra gets a light touch on the ball but they all count the same -- they're 2-2 now with Lille after 49 minutes.
Erling Haaland and Manchester City entered halftime goalless at Porto but it was not for a lack of trying and roughly 90 seconds into the second half, their efforts have finally paid off. The Norway international is in the air and gets enough power on a tricky opportunity to make sure the ball lands in the back of the net, his world-renowned nose for goal in full display.
Three minutes after Real Betis nabbed an equalizer, Lille are back in front! The hosts have a corner of their own and though Betis have just about everyone int he box, the visitors are disorganized in defense and so Alexsandro restores Lille's lead with a goal of his own.
Real Betis earn a set piece and though they can't make much of it initially but if at first you don't succeed, try again. The visitors recycle the ball and soon, Pablo Fornals whips in a cross that lands at Marc Bartra's head. The center back pops the ball into the back of the net to level the score at 1-1 after 33 minutes.
It's going from bad to worse for Inter. Goalkeeper Josep Martínez receives the ball but he cannot figure out a way to actually control it, which is the perfect set-up for Federico Valverde to come darting towards the ball and send it straight into the back of the net with little fuss.
Inter have controlled this match in just about every sense -- 70% possession, seven shots to two, a cursory glance at the statistics reveal -- but they have already been mistake-prone and are now down 2-0 after just 23 minutes. It may be vintage Real Madrid to score twice against the run of play but Inter know their opponents are capable of snatching victories like this and really should be much better at the back as a result.
Kylian Mbappe is picking up from where he left off. Brahim Diaz takes note of a loose ball while Inter are in possession and he quickly kicks off the attack, the France World Cup winner finishing things off to give Real Madrid a 1-0 lead over Inter after just 14 minutes. Mbappe is in remarkable form -- he won the golden boot award in last season's edition of the Champions League after scoring 15 goals and then followed that up with 10 goals the golden boot award at the World Cup this summer.
Lille gets the first goal of the late window, taking a 1-0 lead over Real Betis after just 12 minutes. Ethan Mbappe impressively works his way into the box and whips in a perfectly-placed ball near the goal line, Ayase Ueda able to come up with the finish from close range after making the run. Strong start for the French side, now coached by Davide Anchelotti, son of Carlo.
4' Inter are off to a bright start in the Champions League, their intensity epitomized by Marcus Thuram's impressive shot just minutes after the opening whistle. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sprung into action to keep the visitors at bay for the time being -- if it wasn't for him, Inter might already have the lead.
Mathis Albert, Borussia Dortmund
Only 17, Mathis Albert is someone with a bright future. Leaving the LA Galaxy academy in 2024 for Germany, Albert has been pushing for more time after starring for Dortmund's youth sides. He hasn't made a Bundesliga appearance yet this season, but he did start and play 90 minutes in the Black and Yellows' first-round game of the DFB-Pokal. One to watch, Albert is someone who will be able to earn more minutes as Dortmund goes deeper in this competition, and squad rotation is needed.
Alex Freeman, Villarreal
Last season was the year of Alex Freeman as the 22-year-old right back made his USMNT debut, earned a move from Orlando City SC to Villarreal, and became a starter in the World Cup squad. Now that the Yellow Submarine are healthy, he has spent more time on the bench this season. But Freeman is still a big part of the squad, and Villarreal will need to rotate as they compete in Champions League and LaLiga, which is where Freeman will be able to secure minutes in the long run.

Tuesday is a big day at the Bernabeu as Real Madrid will host Inter for their opening game of the Champions League season. This is the Champions League's comeback of Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu against his former Italian team and his former player, Cristian Chivu, who now leads the Nerazzurri. However, these are the kinds of games in which Mbappé tends to shine. After scoring four goals in his first four LaLiga games, he will be looking to bounce back after missing a crucial penalty against Real Betis over the weekend. There is no better occasion to do so.

Kylian Mbappe isn't the only member of his family starting a Champions League game today -- his brother Ethan starts for Lille, who also have France World Cup winner Olivier Giroud as an option off the bench. Real Betis' front line, meanwhile, is led by Ireland international Troy Parrott.
Lille starting XI: Berke Ozer, Tiago Santos, Nathan Ngoy, Alexsandro, Romain Perraud, Benjamin Andre, Nabil Bentaleb, Ethan Mbappe, Gaetan Perrin, Hakon Haraldsson, Ayase Ueda
Real Betis starting XI: Alvaro Valles, Hector Bellerin, Marc Bartra, Natan, Junior Firpo, Facundo Bernal, Isco, Pablo Fornals, Antony, Troy Parrott, Rodrigo Riquelme
Borussia Dortmund mainstay Serhou Guirassy once again headlines things for the German side, while Tani Oluwaseyi and Georges Mikautadze lead the line for Villarreal. Each side has an American on the bench -- the latest U.S. youth international to come out of Dortmund's academy is teenager Mathis Albert, while U.S. World Cup starter Alex Freeman is part of the visitors' traveling squad.
Borussia Dortmund starting XI: Gregor Kobel, Joane Gadou, Waldemar Anton, Daniel Svensson, Julian Ryerson, Joey Veerman, Marcel Sabitzer, Maximilian Beier, Konstantinos Karetsas, Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy
Villarreal starting XI: Peter Gulacsi, Santiago Mourino, Pau Navarro, Renato Veiga, Sergi Cardona, Santi Comesana, Nathan Saliba, Pape Gueye, Tajon Buchanan, Tani Oluwaseyi, Georges Mikautadze
Exactly a week after becoming Manchester City's record signing, Enzo Fernandez starts in midfield alongside fellow newomcer Ayyoub Bouaddi for the team's trip to Porto while Erling Haaland once again leads the line. Andre Silva, meanwhile, headlines the attack for the Portuguese champions.
Porto starting XI: Diogo Costa, Alberto Costa, Nehuen Perez, Jakub Kiwior, Martim Fernandes, Pablo Rosario, Alan Varela, Gabri Veiga, William Gomes, Andre Silva, Pepe
Manchester City starting XI: Gianluigi Donnarumma, Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, Josko Gvardiol, Enzo Fernandez, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland
Club Brugge win a penalty after a handball is called on Aston Villa's Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the box, and German youth international Nicolo Tresoldi comes up with a simple finish in the 61st minute. Brugge are still down 3-2 but with roughly a half hour on the clock, a point -- at the very least -- feels within touching distance.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is making room for all of the team's stars in their Champions League opener, finding a spot for each of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham for their clash against Inter. New signing Yan Diomande is on the bench but Arda Guler misses out while serving a suspension for the red card he picked up against Bayern Munich last season. Lautaro Martinez, meanwhile, leads the line for the visitors.
Here's a look at both teams' lineups.
Real Madrid starting XI: Thibaut Courtois, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen, Marc Cucurella, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Federico Valverde, Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe
Inter starting XI: Josep Martinez, Benjamin Pavard, Yann Aurel Bisseck, Alessandro Bastoni, Andy Diouf, Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu, Curtis Jones, Carlos Augusto, Lautaro Martinez, Marcus Thuram
I'd argue one of the big storylines in the Champions League this season is whether or not Jose Mourinho's version of Real Madrid are contenders or pretenders but chances are low we'll get the answer this quickly. A clash against Inter offers plenty of intrigue but as imbalanced as Los Blancos' roster might be, they boast enough game-changing talent that will ensure they can stylishly coast through a batch of league phase matches, this one included.

Aston Villa's record signing is officially on the board. Club Brugge's high line gets caught out of possession and Villa are off to the races, the play eventually ending up with Pau Torres notching his second assist of the game before sending the ball Nicolas Jackson's way for a simple finish with goalkeeper Yann Sommer in no man's land. Villa have a 3-1 lead just before halftime, entering cruise control at a very timely juncture of their opening Champions League game.
James Benge did the work so you don't have to -- he took a look at each of the league phase fixtures this season and made his picks for all eight matchdays, naturally beginning with this week's action. Here's a look at how he thinks Matchday 1 will shake out:
And just like that, Aston Villa have restored their lead! Five minutes after Club Brugge's equalizer, Joao Gomes works his way into the box and stays on his feet -- and keeps ahold of the ball -- even as an opponent tries to knock it off him, allowing him to connect with Emiliano Buendia for a simple finish from close range. Just 22 minutes on the clock and we're already off to an entertaining start in Belgium.
AEK Athens earn a freekick on the edge of the area and Razvan Marin expertly slots a curling ball into the back of the net, ensuring his side have a 1-0 lead 21 minutes in. Not a bad way to open your first Champions League game since 2018-19!
