Manchester United and Bayern Munich enjoyed lopsided wins on Thursday in the UEFA Champions League, while Como made their competition debut in style as they reiterated their status as Europe's most exciting team on the rise.
In their first Champions League game since the 2023-24 season, United nabbed a 4-0 win over tournament newcomers Sabah. Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez scored while Benjamin Sesko also got on the scoresheet in his first start of the season. Bayern's 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt, meanwhile, was more of a slow build after a goalless first half but goals from Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane, Alphonso Davies and a brace from Michael Olise ensured they would continue their unbeaten start to the season.
Como, meanwhile, were arguably the standouts of the day. The Champions League newcomers picked up a commanding 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig, easily proving they belong amongst the elites little more than two years after securing promotion to Serie A. Nico Paz managed two assists on the night while the goalscoring efforts were divided amongst the group.
As if Michael Olise was not already having a wonderful day, he adds another goal to his account to make it 5-0 to Bayern Munich over Bodo/Glimt late in the game.
Well, that escalated quickly! Slavia Prague are messy in the back and in stoppage time, Florian Thauvin and Ruben Aguilar score to make it 3-2 to Lens in a matter of minutes.
There's one last moment of excitement for Como on a dream Champions League debut -- Maximo Perrone scores to make it 4-1 over RB Leipzig in the 90th minute.
It's going from bad to worse for Bodo/Glimt -- already down four goals, Odin Bjortuft is sent off for a challenge on Michael Olise. At least Bayern Munich's subsequent freekick didn't result in further damage?
Write off Slavia Prague at your own risk. The hosts earn a freekick near goal and though they are not initially successful, Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser makes a mess of things and so the ball eventually falls straight into the path of Danijel Sturm and he makes no mistake from there! Sturm completes the brace in the 88th minute to give Prague a 2-1 lead -- all while down to 10.
After getting an assist earlier, Michael Olise adds a goal to his account to give Bayern a 4-0 lead over Bodo/Glimt in the 83rd minute. He rips one from distance but somehow does so in a nonchalant manner, perhaps with the confident ease of someone who's already in the midst of a good day.
Bayern Munich earn a corner and though Bodo/Glimt clear the ball out of the box, they aren't out of danger. Alphonso Davies makes a dash towards the penalty area and the moment he makes contact with the ball, he sets it on a course to fly into the back of the net quickly. It's 3-0 to Bayern in the 77th minute, the hosts now poised for a straightforward win despite a goalless first half.
While the action continues across Europe, there's been an interesting development in Turkiye -- Ismail Kartal resigned from his post as the Fenerbahce coach after their 1-1 draw with Roma earlier today, bringing an end to his fourth (!) spell in charge. Never a dull moment in the world of soccer!
Lens have a freekick and after a little bit of pinball in the box, the ball falls to Abdallah Sima and he scores against Slavia Prague, the club where he began his professional career. There's still 17 minutes plus stoppage time to go and Lens are up a man ... can they find a way to win this one?
Manchester United are having a bit of fun now. Bruno Fernandes takes a freekick and the ball quickly lands to Joshua Zirkzee near the post, who has a couple of Sabah bodies on him but confuses his opponents completely. They don't catch him as he backheels the ball to his left and so Lisandro Martinez scores to make it 4-0 to United in the 68th minute. It's his first goal since scoring for Argentina in that iconic game against Cape Verde in the World Cup this summer.
It was a slow build for Bayern Munich but they now have a comfortable 2-0 lead over Bodo/Glimt after 61 minutes, Michael Olise delivering a perfectly-placed ball to Harry Kane's head -- and the England international doesn't even have to jump for it. No wonder each of them are Ballon d'Or nominees.
Finally, a sign of life from RB Leipzig. There's miscommunication in the back for Como and in the end, Nico Paz's heavy pass means the ball's loose close to goal. The visitors pounce and eventually, Andrija Maksimovic scores to make it 3-1 in the 58th minute. Still plenty of time left in this one but the cadence of the game will have to change along the way -- Leipzig have been pretty tame in front of goal so far compared to Como.
Nico Paz connects with Assane Diao, whose shot from an angle lands just inside the goal and ensures Como have a 3-0 lead over RB Leipzig after 54 minutes. This really is a dream, dream start for Champions League first-timers Como, though RB Leipzig have not covered themselves in glory. They're likely to be to the only Bundesliga team to lose on Matchday 1 at this rate.
They might be down to 10 but that didn't stop Slavia Prague from breaking the deadlock against Lens! Samuel Isife plays an incredible long pass to Danijel Sturm, who makes a run towards goal and then takes an impressive strike to send the ball into the back of the net in the 51st minute -- just two minutes after the red card.
The deadlock has officially been broken in Germany. Harry Kane combines with Jamal Musiala and he makes a slick run into the box before coming up with a cool finish, giving Bayern Munich a 1-0 lead over Bodo/Glimt after 47 minutes.
There might not be any goals between Slavia Prague and Lens just yet but we do have a red card! Five minutes after his halftime substitution, Mikulas Konecny is sent off for denial of a goalscoring opportunity and ensures the hosts will play down to 10 for the rest of the match. Lens earn a freekick from the event and 2018 World Cup winner Florian Thauvin takes the opportunity from close range but sends the ball just wide.
The floodgates are officially open at Old Trafford and Manchester United have a third, courtesy of Benjamin Sesko in his first start of the season. Bryan Mbeumo takes advantage of Sabah's disorganization in the back and sends the ball Sesko's way, who adds a third goal to United's account in the 45th minute. Not a bad start for United's first Champions League season in three years.
Youri Tielemans turns with the ball and plays an excellent pass to Bruno Fernandes, who comes up with a classic finish to double Manchester United's lead over Sabah in the 42nd minute.
Everything's coming up Como. Anastasios Douvikas gains ahold of the ball and makes his way into the penalty area, an RB Leipzig defender staying close to him along the way in the hopes of knocking the ball away from him. Douvikas, though, knows exactly what he's doing and pulls away from the opponent just enough to finish off his chance. Como are up 2-0 after 38 minutes, their first-ever Champions League night getting better and better as the game progresses.
Slavia Prague are trying to claim the opening goal of their game against Lens, Danijel Sturm's pass to Emmanuel Ayaosi setting him up for a nice finish. He handled the ball before the finish, though, so the referee quickly calls the goal back. Still goalless between the two tams after 38 minutes.
It may have taken 27 minutes but Manchester United's dominance eventually pays off with a goal from Matheus Cunha. Sabah look disorganized at the back and so when Patrick Dorgu sends a cross to the enar post, Cunha has only space in front of him as he makes the run for a finish from close range.
Como are off to a dream start in their first-ever Champions League game. The hosts nick the ball off RB Leipzig around the midway point and are off to the races, the play resulting in Anastasios Douvikas putting a cross into the box that may not have been intended for Martin Baturina but he gains ahold of the ball nicely and navigates through some traffic for a finish from inside the box.
Roughly 10 minutes ni and it's no real surprise that Manchester United have been in charge of their clash against Sabah thus far -- they've got four shots and tried to find the back of the net with a corner, though it doesn't come off that. Sabah are trying their best to get into the game, though, chiefly by charging up the flanks whenever they see a rare opening.
A pair of draws to start the final day of Matchday 1 action, both hosts coming from behind to rescue a point. Sergino Dest bagged PSV's equalizer in the second half. The Dutch side tried for a game-winner towards the end with two freekicks from close range but couldn't muster on-target chances from either.
