It has been, once again, the day of Lionel Messi. The Argentine superstar scored the decisive goals in a 2-0 victory over Austria, officially becoming the all-time leading scorer in the men's World Cup with 18 goals. In doing so, Lionel Messi surpassed the previous record of 16 goals held by German striker Miroslav Klose, further cementing his place among the greatest players in soccer history. After scoring a hat trick against Algeria in the opening game of the tournament, Messi found the net twice again on Monday against the side coached by Ralf Rangnick, making amends for an earlier setback. The Argentine captain scored the decisive goal shortly after missing a penalty that had been awarded following a VAR review for a foul on Lautaro Martínez just five minutes into the match.
Austria improved after the break and threatened through a Marcel Sabitzer free-kick, but Emiliano Martínez preserved Argentina's lead with a crucial save. While not the most entertaining match of the tournament, Argentina controlled the key moments before Messi added a second deep into stoppage time and secured a second consecutive victory, putting Lionel Scaloni's side in a strong position to top Group J as they officially qualified for the Round of 32 of the tournament, with the aim of defending the title won at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
