Is there any more perfect way for you to imagine Sean Avery announcing his retirement from hockey than by doing it live on Bravo? Because that's what he just did.
Many players make these announcements next to their general manager and coach. Avery did his next to Nicole Richie yet it doesn't seem weird. In fact, it almost would have been odd if Avery said it in another venue.
Unless you are into fashion and the lives of Richie and Avery, I'd suggest you just fast-forward to the 4:30 mark or so of the video.
For the video impaired, Avery was asked by a viewer what his future in hockey is and Avery non-chalantly states that he's retired and that he threw his skates into the Hudson.
This "announcement" comes on the heels of the Connecticut Whale -- the New York Rangers' AHL franchise -- omitting Avery from their postseason roster and telling him he no longer needs to report. Considering he is a free agent this summer, that left his career in a huge state of limbo. But for a guy with as many interests and pursuits away from hockey as Avery, it sure doesn't seem like it was a tough choice for him to decide to retire.
Of course, you never quite know with Avery. Was he joking? Would he reconsider if he did get a contract offer? Well right on cue, there was this from Chris Johnston of the Canadian Press.
Pat Morris says Sean Avery's future plans will be determined by interest in the summer. Says he was "joking" last night.

However Larry Brooks of the New York Post went straight to Avery who said it wasn't really a joke.
Avery tells Post post-hockey career will start when contract expires. "No, that wasn't a joke, yes I'm retiring at end of season and its ok"

Nothing can ever be easy with Avery, can it?
If this is it for Avery, though, is there any doubt what his biggest legacy will be?
