  • 49ers' Fred Warner: Undergoing surgery Tuesday

Warner (ankle) will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Coach Kyle Shanahan said the hope is Warner will be ready in time for training camp next summer after he suffered a dislocated and fractured ankle in Sunday's loss to the Bucs. Tatum Bethune projects to full Warner's hole in the defense moving forward this season, but the 49ers could look for outside reinforcements on defense after losing both Warner and Nick Bosa (knee) to season-ending injuries.

  • 49ers' Tatum Bethune: Impresses in larger role

Bethune recorded 10 total tackles (five solo) during Sunday's 30-19 loss to the Buccaneers. The second-year pro from Florida State had played just three defensive snaps all season prior to Fred Warner's (ankle) injury in the first quarter of Sunday's loss. Bethune made the most of his opportunity, finishing with a career-high and team-leading 10 total tackles across 42 defensive snaps in Week 6. With Warner expected to miss substantial time, Bethune is likely to step in as the 49ers' starting middle linebacker for the remainder of the season.

  • 49ers' Fred Warner: Done for year

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after Sunday's 30-19 loss to the Buccaneers that Warner will undergo season-ending surgery on his right ankle, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Warner was carted off the field during the first quarter of Sunday's game. Further tests revealed that the veteran linebacker dislocated and broke his right ankle, and he will undergo surgery to repair the injuries and be sidelined for the rest of the 2025 campaign. Warner logged one tackle prior to his exit, and the 2018 third-rounder's season will end with him accumulating 51 tackles (28 solo), three pass defenses, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery over six games. The 49ers will turn to Tatum Bethune and Curtis Robinson to fill in the gap at linebacker left by Warner. Rookie third-rounder Nick Martin has been a healthy scratch for each of the first six games of the regular season, but he could be active and make his NFL debut in San Francisco's Week 7 clash against Atlanta on Sunday, Oct. 19.

  • 49ers' Fred Warner: Suffers dislocated ankle

Warner dislocated his right ankle in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports. Warner suffered the injury during the first quarter and was quickly ruled out after he was carted to the locker room. He'll undergo further tests and meet with doctors to determine how much time he'll miss, but the loss of Warner is a big blow to a 49ers defense that is already without Nick Bosa (knee) for the rest of the season. Tatum Bethune and Curtis Robinson will continue to see more snaps at linebacker in Warner's absence.

  • 49ers' Alfred Collins: Sidelined by knee injury

Collins (knee) did not practice Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Collins suffered a knee sprain in Thursday's win over the Rams, so it's not a big surprise that he was unable to practice to begin preparation for a Week 6 matchup against Tampa Bay. • 49ers' Kevin Givens: Practice window opened

The 49ers designated Givens (pectoral) to return from injured reserve Wednesday. Givens suffered a pectoral injury in early August during training camp, which was severe enough for him to open the 2025 regular season on injured reserve. He's progressed enough in his recovery for the 49ers to open his 21-day practice window, and the seventh-year defensive tackle was a limited participant in Wednesday's session, per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. Even with his return to practice, Givens is far from a guarantee to play against the Buccaneers on Sunday.

The 49ers opened Mustapha's (knee) 21-day practice window to return from the reserve/PUP list. Mustapha will return to practice this week and could be reinstated from the PUP list ahead of Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, though that will depend on his participation level in practice. The 2024 fourth-rounder logged 72 tackles (32 solo) and five pass defenses (including one interception) across 16 regular-season games during his rookie season.
