Player Outlook
The Eagles will be one of the first six DSTs taken in pretty much every league this season. Should they be? The addition of edge rusher Jonathan Greenard boosted their pass rush, and adding Riq Woolen and Jonathan Jones to their depth in the defensive secondary should help. Their schedule has some soft spots in it as they'll take on the AFC South, the Steelers and the Panthers. But the NFC East figures to be tougher this year than last year, and four games against the NFC West promise to be challenging. Assuming you're OK starting this stout defense against tough offenses, you should be able to commit to them as your season-long DST.

  • Eagles' Joe Tryon-Shoyinka: Goes to reserve/retired list

Philadelphia placed Tryon-Shoyinka on its reserve/retired list Tuesday, Zach Berman of The Athletic reports. Tryon-Shoyinka turned 27 years old in April, but the transaction indicates his NFL career could be over. In his absence, rookie seventh-rounder Keyshawn James-Newby could get more looks off the edge come training camp in July.

  • Chandler Martin: Getting waived

Philadelphia waived Martin (undisclosed) with a failed physical designation Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Martin was waived by the Eagles with the same designation earlier in June before re-signing with the club just two days later, so it's possible he winds up back in the fold at some point. As long as he does remain gone, Chance Campbell is a candidate to pick up the leftover practice reps.

  • Za'Darius Smith: Coming out of retirement?

Smith was released from the Eagles' reserve/retired list Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Smith surprisingly retired after just five games with the Eagles last season, but he now appears open to playing again in the right situation. The 33-year-old remained an effective pass rusher during his final two NFL seasons, recording 35 total tackles, including 10.5 sacks, and one pass defensed across 22 regular-season games. As a free agent, Smith could draw interest from contending teams seeking depth off the edge.

  • Eagles' Jihaad Campbell: Returning for training camp?

Campbell (shoulder) has not practiced all spring but is expected to return for training camp, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. As defensive coordinator Vic Fangio stated in late May, the expectation is for Campbell to be ready for Eagles' training camp in July. Campbell, a 2025 first-round pick from Alabama, appeared in 17 regular-season games during his rookie campaign, recording 80 total tackles, three passes defensed, including one interception, and one forced fumble. With Nakobe Dean's departure in free agency, Campbell is expected to operate as one of Philadelphia's top inside linebackers once healthy.

Philadelphia re-signed Martin on Wednesday, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports. Just two days after being waived by the Eagles, Martin is now back in the building as OTAs resume. He played 34 snaps in his rookie season with Baltimore in 2025, all of which came on special teams.

  • Brandon Graham: Gets released by Philly

The Eagles released Graham on Tuesday, Zach Berman of The Athletic reports. Per Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the move was anticipated due to language in Graham's contract, and there's still a chance he could return for another season. He turned 38 in April, and all of Nolan Smith, trade acquisition Jonathan Greenard, 2024 third-rounder Jalyx Hunt and free agent acquisition Arnold Ebiketie figure to make contributions on the edge for Philadelphia in 2026.

  • Eagles' Andrew Mukuba: Returns for OTAs

Mukuba (ankle) participated in Philadelphia's OTAs on Wednesday, Brooks Kubena of The Athletic reports. Mukuba missed Philadelphia's last seven games (including playoffs) of the 2025 season due to an ankle injury, but it now appears he's recovered from the issue. Prior to picking up the injury, the 2025 second-round pick from Texas had emerged as a crucial part of the Eagles' secondary, recording 46 total tackles, including 0.5 sacks, and three passes defensed, with two interceptions, across 11 appearances. He's expected to operate as the team's top free safety during the 2026 campaign.

  • Eagles' Cooper DeJean: Moving to safety

The Eagles stated Friday that Dejean will be moving to safety in a base defense, Brandon Lee Gowton of bleedinggreennation.com reports. Dejean played many of his 2025 snaps as the slot cornerback in the Eagles' scheme, but it appears the team intends to test Marcus Epps with a competition for the starting strong safety job. With Michael Carter joining the team after a 2025 midseason trade, it seems defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is attempting to maximize his defensive backs. Both Dejean and Carter have received All-Pro votes at slot cornerback, with Dejean winning first team honors in 2025. If Dejean can translate that talent to safety, the Eagles could field elite value at both positions as they attempt to defend the NFC East title.

  • Eagles' Jihaad Campbell: May not attend OTAs

Campbell (shoulder) may not participate in OTAs but will be ready for training camp, Brooks Kubena of The Athletic reports. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio made it clear that the linebacker would be ready for training camp and left the door open for Campbell to even log some reps in the latter portion of OTAs. The 2025 first-round pick is set to step into a starting role next to Zack Baun in 2026. The departure of Nakobe Dean in free agency means Campbell will take on an expanded role in the Eagles' defense.

  • Eagles' Jalen Carter: Expensive fifth-year option

The Eagles picked up Carter's fifth-year option Monday, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The cost to maintain Carter's services through 2027 comes at a hefty $27 million. The defensive tackle earned Pro Bowl honors in both 2024 and 2025, adding value to his fifth-year option. Carter missed multiple games due to various injuries last season, as well as being ejected in Week 1 for an incident involving him spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. When Carter was on the field, he produced 33 tackles (21 solo), including 3.0 sacks, and seven passes defensed over 12 regular-season games (really 11 since he was ejected before the first snap of Week 1).

  • Eagles' Nolan Smith: Fifth-year option excercised

The Eagles exercised Smith's fifth-year option Monday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Smith will earn another $13.7 million, guaranteeing his services to the Eagles through 2027. The linebacker is coming off a slightly disappointing season that was spoiled by a lingering triceps injury he originally suffered during training camp. Despite the issue, Smith still started 12 regular-season games, logging 31 tackles (15 solo), including 3.0 sacks. Headed into 2026 healthy, Smith will look to produce a year similar to his 2024 season (42 tackles, including 6.5 sacks), which would help greatly in long-term extension discussions with the organization.

  • Eagles' Keyshawn James-Newby: Picked up by Eagles

Philadelphia selected James-Newby in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 252nd overall. James-Newby enjoyed a six-year college career that ended with New Mexico in 2025, when he was selected to the All-MWC First-Team after posting 52 total tackles, including 9.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and five pass defenses across 13 games. He's not the most powerful pass-rushing prospect in the draft, but James-Newby beat opposing blockers with his burst off the snap, and he'll need to become a more reliable tackler to see meaningful snaps at the NFL level. He'll compete with the likes of Jalyx Hunt, Jose Ramirez, Arnold Ebiketie and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka for rotational snaps at the edge rusher position behind Nolan Smith and the newly acquired Jonathan Greenard (shoulder).

  • Eagles' Uar Bernard: Drafted by Eagles

The Eagles selected Bernard in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 251st overall. Bernard (6-foot-4, 306 pounds) put together an impressive workout performance at the International Player Pathway Pro Day, highlighted by a 4.69 40-yard dash and a 39-inch vertical. Though he has not played organized football at the collegiate level, Philadelphia is intrigued enough by the potential of his rare combination of size and athleticism to invest draft capital into Bernard's development. While Bernard looks set to begin his career working at defensive tackle, he could also test his hand at edge rusher or along the O-line.

Uche is slated to sign a one-year deal with the Dolphins, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. Uche was a strong depth piece for the Eagles, playing defensive snaps in nine regular-season games in 2025. The strongside linebacker will bring both defensive and special-teams value to a depleted Dolphins linebacker room as he returns to the AFC East. Uche was traded from the Patriots to the Chiefs in late October 2024 and now will get to face the team that selected him in the second round of the 2020 Draft twice per year.

He finished with 83 tackles (53 solo), four pass defenses (one interception), one forced fumble and one fumble recovery across 16 regular-season games in 2025 while playing over 1,000 defensive snaps for the first time in his NFL career. The Texans boasted one of the best defensive units in the league in 2025, and the addition of Blankenship bolsters a strong secondary that also includes Derek Stingley, Kamari Lassiter, Jalen Pitre and Jaylen Reed.

  • Raiders' Nakobe Dean: Gets three-year deal with Vegas

Dean and the Raiders agreed to a three-year, $36 million contract Monday that includes $20 million guaranteed, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Dean spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Eagles, who selected the Georgia product in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Dean's most productive season in Philadelphia was in 2024, when he logged 128 total tackles across 15 regular-season games, though he tore the patellar tendon in his left knee during the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX run that caused him to open the 2025 season on injured reserve. Dean appeared in just 10 regular-season games last year, finishing with 55 tackles (30 solo), including a career-high 4.0 sacks, one pass defense and two forced fumbles. With Devin White and Jamal Adams both unrestricted free agents, Dean is slated to start at linebacker alongside Quay Walker in 2026.
