Player Outlook
By the end of the 2024 season, the Eagles were arguably the best actual defense in all of football. This was made clear throughout the postseason and capped off by how well they shut down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. A young and talented core got even better this offseason when Jihad Campbell fell to them in the first round of the draft. They will have to make up for the loss of interior pass rusher Milton Williams, but their young and talented secondary should take another step forward in the turnover department with one of the best defensive coordinators in Vic Fangio. The Eagles averaged the seventh-most Fantasy points per game in 2024 and are likely to jump into the top five with No. 1 overall upside in 2025. They are one of the first DSTs you should target in your drafts.

  • Eagles' Nakobe Dean: Opening season on PUP list

Dean (knee) was moved to the reserve/PUP list Tuesday. Dean will be forced to miss at least the first four games of the 2025 campaign as he continues his recovery from the torn left patellar tendon he sustained in the Eagles' wild-card win over the Packers in January. The 24-year-old took a massive step forward in his third NFL season, compiling 128 total tackles (80 solo), including 3.0 sacks, while also adding an interception, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries over 15 regular-season contests in 2024. Once healthy, Dean figures to start alongside Zack Baun at interior linebacker.

  • Eagles' Tariq Castro-Fields: Not practicing

Castro-Fields (hamstring) did not practice Monday, Olivia Reiner of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Castro-Fields was one of five Eagles not practicing Monday, following Saturday's preseason loss to Cleveland. He appeared in two regular-season games for Carolina last season before being released in October, and any further missed time in training camp could damage his chances to make the team.

  • Eagles' Nolan Smith: Cleared to practice

Smith (concussion) participated in the Eagles' joint practice against the Browns on Wednesday. The Georgia product is coming off a productive 2024 campaign in which he logged 42 total tackles and 6.5 sacks over 16 regular-season games and added 4.0 sacks across the Eagles' four postseason contests. • Eagles' Jakorian Bennett: Competing for CB2 role

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said after Saturday's training camp practice that Bennett has a chance at competing for the No. 2 cornerback job opposite Quinyon Mitchell, Glenn Erby of USA Today reports. Bennett was the odd-man out in the Raiders' cornerback rotation, which prompted his trade to the Eagles this past Monday in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker. Bennett made his Eagles training camp debut Saturday, and the 2023 fourth-rounder has a shot at earning a spot on the first-team defense after Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson struggled during Philadelphia's 34-27 preseason win over Cincinnati on Thursday. Bennett would certainly make his case with a strong performance in training camp and over the Eagles' final two preseason games, starting with Saturday, Aug. 16 against the Browns.

  • Eagles' Byron Young: Dealing with groin injury

Young (arm/groin) did not participate in Saturday's training camp practice, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. Young appeared to injure his arm during Monday's practice, but he is now dealing with a groin injury that caused him to miss the Eagles' preseason win over the Bengals on Thursday. Young caught on with Philadelphia last August after being cut by the Raiders at the conclusion of training camp, but the 2023 third-rounder didn't play a single snap last season, mostly due to a hamstring injury that landed him on injured reserve in late October. He's battling for a spot on the Eagles' 53-man roster as a rotational defensive end, so he'll look to progress enough in his recovery to return to practice and be available for Philadelphia's second exhibition game against Cleveland on Saturday, Aug. 16.
