The Steelers announced Hines Ward's release without even considering the pay cut he offered to take from the $4 million salary he was due to make in 2012, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported, citing a source. That meant the Steelers, for whom Ward was under contract for two more seasons, deemed him expendable and past his usefulness for the team.
