The Eagles get the win here and improve to 9-2, opening up a 2.5-game lead in the NFC East. The Rams are 5-6 and in a four-way battle for the NFC West crown, where all four teams are either 5-6 or 6-5.
Saquon Barkley continues to make a statement for the NFL MVP award, as his historic night paced the Philadelphia Eagles to a dominant 37-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Inglewood, California, on Sunday night. Barkley finished with an Eagles franchise-record rushing 255 yards and 302 yards from scrimmage in the win, the first player in the 91-year history to reach those marks.
Barkley had a 70-yard touchdown run to start the second half and a 72-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to ice the game. He's the first player in NFL history with two 70-plus-yard touchdown runs in the second half of a game, a night which he finished with 255 rushing yards and 9.8 yards per carry with two scores. Barkley also had four catches for 47 yards to give him 302 yards from scrimmage, also an Eagles franchise record.
The Eagles finished with 316 rushing yards in the game, the fourth time in six weeks they have eclipsed the 200-plus-yard mark for rushing yards. Philadelphia averaged 7.3 yards per carry in the game, including 10.1 in the second half. Barkley had 182 rushing yards in the second half, averaging 14.0 yards per carry.
The win was Philadelphia's seventh in a row, keeping the Eagles (9-2) within one game of the Detroit Lions for home-field advantage in the NFC. The Rams (5-6) had an opportunity to seize the NFC West lead with a win, but fell to a game behind the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals with the loss.
Why the Eagles won
Saquon Barkley. What Barkley accomplished was unmatched in the 91-year history of the Philadelphia Eagles. His 255 rushing yards beat LeSean McCoy's franchise record of 217 (2013) and his 302 scrimmage yards surpassed Duce Staley's franchise record of 262 (2000). Barkley had the ninth-most rushing yards and yards from scrimmage in a game in NFL history.
Barkley finished with 182 rushing yards and averaged 14.0 yards per carry in the second half, having two 70-yard touchdown runs in the final 30 minutes of the game. This is the best performance by any player in the history of the Eagles.
Why the Rams lost
Saquon Barkley -- and the Eagles run offense. The Rams allowed 314 rushing yards to the Eagles on Sunday night, an average of 7.0 yards per carry. Los Angeles had no answer for Barkley (255 rushing yards), Jalen Hurts (39 rushing yards), nor Kenneth Gainwell (22 rushing yards and a touchdown). The Eagles had 12 of their 24 first downs rushing, as their 314 rushing yards were more than the Rams' 290 total yards.
The Rams couldn't get off the field as the Eagles held the ball for 33:41. They had no answer for the Eagles rushing attack.
Turning point
Saquon Barkley. Why wouldn't it be Barkley, whose 70-yard touchdown run to start the second half opened up the floodgates for the Eagles. Barkley sprinted up the A-gap and cut past a defender and was off to the races to give the Eagles a 20-7 lead.
Only Barkley could pull off an electrifying run to spark the Eagles on the first play of the second half. That sparked a second half which the Eagles ran for 202 yards and averaged 10.6 yards per carry.
Play of the game
Saquon Barkley. The final run of the night for Barkley was the 72-yard run was the exclamation point of Barkley's historic night, galloping past the Rams defense after cutting back in the B-gap for the long score.
The Eagles led 37-14 with 2:44 left after the 72-yard run, capping off Barkley's 255 yards rushing and 302 yards from scrimmage. Barkley became the first player in NFL history to have two 70-yard touchdown runs in the second half with this run.
Up next
The Eagles (9-2) travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens next Sunday while the Rams (5-6) travel to New Orleans to face the Saints.
