'Happy for his big ass': Jordan Davis' blocked FG seals Eagles' win, plus more takeaways from shocker vs. Rams

PHILADELPHIA -- In what may have been the best comeback in Philadelphia Eagles history, Jalen Hurts and the offense willed their way to a 33-26 victory on a picture perfect Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Eagles were staring at defeat, as Joshua Karty was set to kick a 44-yard field goal for the victory. Jordan Davis blocked the kick --- his second of the game -- and returned it for the score to seal the stunning win. The Eagles blocked two Rams kicks en route to erasing a 19-point deficit in the second half.

Hurts led a furious comeback for the victory, capped with a 4-yard pass to DeVonta Smith with 1:48 left to put the Eagles up for good. The Eagles scored 20 straight points in the comeback, as Hurts went 16 of 22 for 204 yards with three touchdowns in the second half for a 140.9 passer rating.

This is the biggest comeback at home for the Eagles since 1988, when Philadelphia rallied from a 20-point deficit at Veterans Stadium to beat the Dallas Cowboys. The 19-point comeback was the biggest in Lincoln Financial Field history.

Check out the biggest takeaways from this NFC thriller below:

Play of the game

What Jordan Davis did to win a game for the Eagles was unbelievable, blocking a 44-yard field goal by Joshua Karty with no time left to seal the Eagles' victory. Davis blocked not one -- but two -- kicks in the fourth quarter to keep the Rams off the board in the second half and win the game.

The 61-yard field goal block for a score was the longest field goal block returned for a touchdown since Matt Ware returned a 65-yard block in 2005 -- also another incredible victory for the Eagles. Davis scooped up the ball and ran 18.59 miles per hour for a touchdown, the fastest speed by a player over 330 pounds since at least 2017, per Next Gen Stats.

"I'm f---ing so happy for that guy," right tackle Fred Johnson said. "So happy for his big ass. ... That's slow for him. A beautiful thing to watch."

Unsung hero

Johnson entered the game at right tackle with 14:06 left in the third quarter, replacing Matt Pryor following a Jalen Hurts fumble that lead to a Rams touchdown that put Los Angeles up 26-7. Pryor was the initial replacement for Lane Johnson, who left the game after the Eagles' initial possession with a neck injury (which may have occurred during a "Tush Push").

Jalen Hurts was 16 of 23 for 206 yards and three touchdowns to no interceptions after Johnson entered the game, averaging 9.0 yards per attempt and having a 137.0 passer rating. The Eagles scored on three of the four possessions Johnson was in (scoring 20 unanswered points), and Hurts was only sacked once.

"The offense was due for a spark, and I felt like I was that spark," Johnson said. "I felt like I just had to do my best and let the chips fall where they may. I took the moment and made the most of the moment. I felt like I had to step up for my brothers."

Johnson said he didn't have a single rep at right tackle all week in practice and was just thrown in there on Sunday. The move greatly paid off.

"He showed up and showed out when his number was called on," Hurts said. "It's a beautiful game."

Jalen Hurts' second half

Hurts had another incredible comeback for the Eagles, who have won the last 17 games Hurts has started and finished. This one wasn't perfect for Hurts, who was 4 of 8 for 17 yards in the first half (56.2 rating) as the Eagles had -1 net passing yards.

The second half didn't start any better for Hurts, as he fumbled the ball for his first giveaway of the year. The Rams scored on the next play to take a 26-7 lead just 52 seconds into the third quarter. From there, Hurts went 16 of 23 for 206 yards and three touchdown passes on the next four drives, while also having four carries for 19 yards.

On the game-winning drive, Hurts went 6 of 10 for 72 yards with a touchdown for a 115.4 rating, which included the game-winning pass to DeVonta Smith with 1:48 left. He finished 21 of 32 for 236 yards and three touchdowns for a 117.4 rating.

"It's kind of expected. It's Jalen Hurts," said Saquon Barkley. "We know the type of players we have on this team. That's our quarterback."

Up next

The Eagles (3-0) head to Tampa to face the Buccaneers (3-0) next Sunday. The Rams (2-1) host the Colts (3-0) next Sunday.

FG block than taunting penalty for Jalen Carter

A huge Fg block for Carter to keep the score at 26-21, followed by a taunting penalty. Carter has 5 unnecessary roughness penalties (or their variants) since entering the league. Eagles just don't let up.

Eagles have questionable 4th down decision

After getting a stop on 4th-and-1, the Eagles decide to go for it on 4th-and-7 from the 50. Jalen Hurts almost throws an INT intended for A.J. Brown, but it was interesting why the Eagles didn't punt in a 26-21 game with just under 10 minutes to go.

Rams get ball at 50 and are driving.

Jalen Hurts is on fire right now

The Eagles have scored TDs in each of their last 2 possessions. Jalen hurts has found a soft zone in the middle of teh field and is taking full advantage of what the Rams are giving him.

Eagles have life

All it took was a Hurts pass to A.J. brown to get the offense going. brown catches and 8-yard pass and the floodgates open. Hurts finds Browns for 38 yards on the next play, then Dallas Goedert for a 33-yard TD.

Hurts was 3-of-3 for 69 yards and a TD on that drive. Now can the Eagles stop the Rams?

This Eagles offense is really bad without Lane Johnson

Rams 26, Eagles 7

Jalen Hurts was sacked on the 2nd offensive play to open the 2nd half. Just Hurts' 5th giveaway in his last 17 games.

Matt Pryor just didn't block Jared Verse. The Eagles offense has run 14 plays since Lane Johnson has been out. They have -3 yards (not counting kneeldowns).

 Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Turnover

Rams score a TD on first play off turnover. Stafford to Kyren Williams for the score.

Jalen Hurts -- since Lane Johnson exited the game

2-of-5, 1 yard, 0.2 YPA, 47.9 rating (sacked twice) 1 carry, -1 yard

These are actual numbers. This is the worst Hurts has played with the Eagles. He missed a wide open throw to Jahan Dotson, has no progressions in his throws, and no trust in any of his reads. And A.J. Brown still doesn't have a catch.

This is bad.

Another FG for the Rams

If there's any saving grace for the Eagles, the defense is holding the Rams to 0-of-2 in the red zoen and 0-of-3 on third down. That's why the Rams are only up 9 despite outgaining them 192-27.

Another drive for the Rams that leads to points, but Eagles hold them to FG

Rams have a methodical 12 play drive that goes for 48 yards, but a holding penalty by Coleman Shelton takes back a Kyren Williams touchdown. Matthew Stafford almost throws an INT to Cooper DeJean, but the pass is to high for the Eagles CB/

LA gets a FG out of the drive. Somehow the Eagles are only down 6.

There is the Matthew Stafford we're used to seeing

After starting 3-of-7 on the first two drives, Stafford gets cooking. He fires a 44-yard TD to Davante Adams to cap off a 3-play give to give the Rams the lead. Not sure the Eagles wanted a safety on Adams, but that's credit to Sean McVay. 1-of-2 for 44 yards and a TD on that drive for No. 9 -- who is still elite at 37.

Slow start for Matthew Stafford

Matthew Stafford through 2 drives: 3-of-7, 23 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT, 11.9 rating.

He's been a little off target with his throws in the early going. Had a poor throw on the interception to Zack Baun, who already has two passes defensed early in this one.
