Dolphins vs. Chargers score: Ladd McConkey saves day as L.A. escapes Miami with last-second FG

Staring down a third consecutive loss in the final minute of the game, the Los Angeles Chargers and their top playmakers refused to lose as the Bolts snatched the lead and the win back in a 29-27 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The lead changed hands twice in the final minute of the game, with the Dolphins taking the lead shortly before a massive play by Ladd McConkey of the Chargers swung things completely back in Los Angeles' favor.

After going down 26-13 in the fourth quarter, the Dolphins struck back with two touchdowns, first with running back De'Von Achane closing the score to 26-20 before Tua Tagovailoa led his offense down the field yet again. At the end of a 13-play, 82-yard drive, Tagovailoa found tight end Darren Waller for a 7-yard go-ahead touchdown, giving Miami a scant 27-26 lead with 46 seconds to play.

With 34 seconds to play and their backs against the wall, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert looked momentarily to be dead to rights for a sack, only to get the ball out and off to wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who made a defender miss and then went off to the races, gaining 42 yards on a catch-and-run that took the ball all the way to the Dolphins' 17-yard line. Two yards and a few plays later, Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker hit his fourth field goal of the day, converting a 33-yarder to put his team up 29-27 with a mere five seconds to play. A Derwin James interception of Tagovailoa snuffed out any hopes of a miracle play by Miami and sealed the win.

After losing two games in a row to the New York Giants and Washington Commanders, the Chargers narrowly avoided another setback to improve to 4-2, which serves as especially important after the Denver Broncos won over the New York Jets earlier Sunday. With their win over the Dolphins combined with their Week 3 win over the Broncos, the Chargers continue to maintain the lead in the AFC West via tiebreaker.

As for the Dolphins, they drop to 1-5 after being let down in a late-game situation yet again. The Dolphins' last-minute loss comes one week after they narrowly lost a fourth-quarter shootout to the Carolina Panthers, and also serves as yet another blow to embattled coach Mike McDaniel.

Darren Waller touchdown puts Dolphins up by 1 with 46 seconds to play

After the Chargers went 3-and-out and only burned one minute and 37 seconds of game clock, the Dolphins have taken the chance they've been given to mount a charge into Los Angeles territory. Down 26-20, the Dolphins marched down the field all the way to 3rd & Goal, ending the drive with a go-ahead touchdown from Tua Tagovailoa to tight end Darren Waller with 46 seconds to play.

With the extra point, the Dolphins now lead 27-26, and they possess all three timeouts to just one for the Chargers, who will have very limited time to try and move the ball into range for a game-winning field goal.

Chargers build on lead with Cameron Dicker field goal, go up 26-13 in fourth quarter

After a Chargers sack of Tua Tagovailoa short-circuited a Miami drive, the Chargers yet again took the ball after a punt and turned a possession into points.

Thanks to some explosive runs by Vidal, including gains of 27 and 13 yards on back-to-back plays, the Chargers were able to advance the ball all the way to the Dolphins' 17 yard line for a 35-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker, putting the Chargers up 26-13 with 12:47 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Tua Tagovailoa interception turns into Chargers' second touchdown of second half

Shortly after the Ladd McConkey touchdown, the Chargers have now built a double-digit lead thanks to their second interception of Tua Tagovailoa today. This time, Benjamin St-Juste got his hands on a short pass intended for De'Von Achane, giving the Bolts the ball back at the Dolphins' 37-yard line.

The Chargers offense took the turnover and used it to march down the field again, ending the drive with a Justin Herbert touchdown to Kimani Vidal. With the extra point, the Chargers are now up 23-13 on Miami.

Deep completion to Jaylen Waddle helps Dolphins pad lead, Miami up 13-9 at the half

Following a Chargers punt after they gained just eight yards in five plays, the Dolphins managed to put together a quality two-minute drive that included a huge play from Tua Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle. On 3rd & 10 at Miami's 38, Tagovailoa was able to find Waddle for a 45-yard completion down the left side, putting the Dolphins in business at the Chargers' 17-yard line.

The Dolphins were unable to parlay Waddle's catch into a touchdown, thanks in part to an illegal use of hands penalty that backed them up 10 yards. But a 27-yard field goal by Riley Patterson to end the half extended Miami's lead to 13-9 as both teams head to the locker room.

Riley Patterson field goal puts Dolphins up 10-9

With the exception of De'Von Achane's touchdown, this game has been an affair of the Chargers and Dolphins traded field goals, with the latest coming by virtue of Miami's Riley Patterson. After an eight play, 46-yard drive, Patterson was able to hit a 47-yard field goal to make up for his earlier miss, putting the Dolphins back up 10-9 with time starting to wind down in the first half.

Cameron Dicker hits third field goal of the game, Chargers go up 9-7

Following a missed field goal by Miami, the Chargers yet again moved the ball enough for a field goal, moving the ball 42 yards in six plays but yet again having to settle for three points. Those three points were enough, however, to give the Chargers the lead back after Cameron Dicker hit a 29-yard field goal.

Riley Patterson misses 57 yard field goal, score remains 7-6

The Dolphins were able to stage a short drive at the end of the first quarter into the second, but things went haywire after a holding penalty negated a 15-yard pass from Tua Tagovailoa to Darren Waller on 3rd & 8. The penalty set up a 3rd & 18, leading to a 57-yard field goal attempt after Jaylen Waddle was able to pick up eight yards.

Kicker Riley Patterson pushed the ball wide right, leaving the Dolphins with nothing and leaving the score 7-6.

Kimani Vidal puts Chargers back in business, Dicker field goal closes score to 7-6

In response to Achane's touchdown run, the Chargers turned in an explosive run of their own thanks to second-year running back Kimani Vidal. On a 3rd & 1 from the Chargers' 41, Vidal broke off a 38-yard run to put the Bolts in Miami territory, advancing all the way to the Dolphins' 21-yard line.

Vidal would later break off an eight yard run to the Dolphins' 13, but was unable to pick up a first down on 3rd & 2, forcing yet another Dicker field goal. Dicker's field goal was good from 31 yards out, closing the Miami lead to 7-6.

Dolphins get takeaway by forcing, recovering Chargers fumble; De'Von Achane scores on next play

The Chargers got lucky on their first drive when Keenan Allen recovered his own fumble, but they wouldn't get away with it twice. After getting the ball back on a Dolphins punt, Chargers tight end Oronde Gadsden fumbled the ball at midfield, with Rasul Douglas forcing the fumble and Jordyn Brooks recovering.

The Dolphins immediately turned the takeaway into their first touchdown of the game, as De'Von Achane ran for a 49-yard touchdown on Miami's first play after taking over possession of the football. The Dolphins now lead 7-3 following the extra point.

Chargers turn interception into points, go up 3-0 on Cameron Dicker field goal

Following the interception by Tony Jefferson, the Chargers were able to move the ball into position for kicker Cameron Dicker to put them up 3-0, but they took an interesting path to getting there. Dicker initially hit a successful 58-yard field goal, but the play was nullified by an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Dolphins that gave the Chargers an automatic first down.

The Chargers then moved the ball further into Miami territory, but they were lucky to maintain possession after wide receiver Keenan Allen recovered his own fumble at the Dolphins' 18 yard line. The Chargers went no further, and Dicker trotted back out to hit a successful 35-yard field goal.
