Staring down a third consecutive loss in the final minute of the game, the Los Angeles Chargers and their top playmakers refused to lose as the Bolts snatched the lead and the win back in a 29-27 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The lead changed hands twice in the final minute of the game, with the Dolphins taking the lead shortly before a massive play by Ladd McConkey of the Chargers swung things completely back in Los Angeles' favor.
After going down 26-13 in the fourth quarter, the Dolphins struck back with two touchdowns, first with running back De'Von Achane closing the score to 26-20 before Tua Tagovailoa led his offense down the field yet again. At the end of a 13-play, 82-yard drive, Tagovailoa found tight end Darren Waller for a 7-yard go-ahead touchdown, giving Miami a scant 27-26 lead with 46 seconds to play.
With 34 seconds to play and their backs against the wall, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert looked momentarily to be dead to rights for a sack, only to get the ball out and off to wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who made a defender miss and then went off to the races, gaining 42 yards on a catch-and-run that took the ball all the way to the Dolphins' 17-yard line. Two yards and a few plays later, Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker hit his fourth field goal of the day, converting a 33-yarder to put his team up 29-27 with a mere five seconds to play. A Derwin James interception of Tagovailoa snuffed out any hopes of a miracle play by Miami and sealed the win.
After losing two games in a row to the New York Giants and Washington Commanders, the Chargers narrowly avoided another setback to improve to 4-2, which serves as especially important after the Denver Broncos won over the New York Jets earlier Sunday. With their win over the Dolphins combined with their Week 3 win over the Broncos, the Chargers continue to maintain the lead in the AFC West via tiebreaker.
As for the Dolphins, they drop to 1-5 after being let down in a late-game situation yet again. The Dolphins' last-minute loss comes one week after they narrowly lost a fourth-quarter shootout to the Carolina Panthers, and also serves as yet another blow to embattled coach Mike McDaniel.
