The Cowboys crowd has full faith in the All-Pro kicker to send them home happy
Cowboys outlast Giants in wild, back-and-forth OT duel as Brandon Aubrey drills four FGs, including 64-yarder
Dallas wins a wild one after picking off Russell Wilson in OT
In an absolutely wild, back-and-forth affair at AT&T Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys came from behind in the final moments and pulled off a 40-37 victory over the New York Giants in overtime, capturing the first victory of the Brian Schottenheimer era in dramatic fashion.
Dak Prescott led both game-tying and game-winning field goal drives, as Brandon Aubrey connected from 64 yards out at the regulation buzzer to send the game into an extra period and then again from 46 yards out to win the game with no time left on the clock in OT.
The sequence of events to get to those field goal drives was absurd. Dallas scored a go-ahead touchdown on a back-shoulder throw to George Pickens with 52 seconds left in the game, and the Giants had no timeouts in their quiver. They needed a touchdown drive to take the lead, and it took them all of 27 seconds to get it as Russell Wilson found Malik Nabers over the top of double coverage for his third touchdown toss of the game.
Alas, that left Dallas enough time to engineer a field goal drive while trailing by three. Aubrey's kick looked like it would have been good from 70 yards out, as he calmly drilled it through the uprights. The two teams then traded punts on their respective first drives of overtime, and Dallas had its second drive undermined by an offensive pass interference penalty on Pickens and then a third-down drop by Jalen Tolbert. But the Cowboys managed to get the ball back a third time thanks to Donovan Wilson, who picked off Russell Wilson on what seemed like the umpteenth deep shot he took on the afternoon.
Prescott found Pickens for a big gain to get Dallas just outside field goal range, then scrambled up the middle to set up the game-winning kick. He finished the game having completed 38 of 52 passes for 361 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, repeatedly connecting with CeeDee Lamb (9 catches for 112 yards), Jake Ferguson (9 catches for 78 yards) and Pickens (5 catches for 68 yards) as the Cowboys battled back from deficits both early and late.
Prescott was mostly matched throughout the game by Wilson, who bounced back from a game that had fans and analysts alike calling for his job and went 30 of 41 for 450 yards, three touchdowns and the aforementioned interception. He connected on several of his trademark moon balls, finding Nabers (9 catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns) and Wan'Dale Robinson (8 catches for 142 yards and a touchdown) for big gains all over the field.
But Wilson made a pair of crucial mistakes in overtime after playing a nearly flawless game in regulation. With the Giants facing second-and-3 on their first possession of the extra period, Wilson tried to double-clutch on a throw but ended up throwing it backwards for a 14-yard loss. On their next possession, Wilson unleashed an arm punt down the field on second down and it dropped easily into the hands of Donovan Wilson. That pick set up Dallas' game-winning drive.
See below for more takeaways on this game.
Why the Cowboys won
Prescott's big day, hard running from Javonte Williams, timely plays from the receivers and Brandon Aubrey's monster leg.
Prescott forced a pass into double coverage that resulted in a pick by Dru Phillips, but was otherwise quite good despite being repeatedly under pressure throughout the game. Williams ran for 97 yards on his 18 carries, including a 30-yard touchdown jaunt, and he had six receptions for 33 yards to boot. Lamb, Ferguson and Pickens combined for 23 receptions and over 250 receiving yards.
And Aubrey connected on all four of his extra points as well as field goals of 51, 44, 64 and 46 yards. Those latter two kicks tied and won the game, and he drilled them easily through the middle of the uprights.
Why the Giants lost
They made an absolutely unacceptable amount of mistakes throughout the game.
They took an incredible 14 (FOURTEEN) penalties that were accepted. That had at least six more that were wiped out by either offsetting penalties or being declined. They were called for three penalties on one play. (All three were offset by a taunting call on CeeDee Lamb.) Starting tackle James Hudson III was called for five penalties in the first quarter alone. They turned five trips into the red zone into just one touchdown. They had a fourth-down drop that would have extended one of those drives.
And Wilson had the two backbreaking mistakes in overtime, the latter of which directly led to Dallas' game-winning field goal.
Turning point
It's hard to choose just one turning point here, given just how many times this game went back and forth. We can start with the Giants' first two drives, where they moved the ball at will but came away with only two field goals, leaving the door open for the Cowboys to come back despite being dominated early on.
We can go with the turnover on downs in Dallas territory, which followed Prescott's interception and led to the Giants coming up empty on yet another red-zone drive. We can go with the final drive of regulation, where the Giants easily let the Cowboys move the ball up the field despite being pinned in their own territory with just 25 seconds left.
Or we can go with Wilson's two overtime mistakes, which turned advantageous situations for the Giants into a punt and then a pick. All of those would qualify.
Highlight play
I know the Giants lost and the Cowboys won, but I think we have to give this to each of Wilson's three touchdown passes, which looked suspiciously like each other as he found Nabers and Robinson deep down the field with his trademark moon ball.
That first grab by Nabers, twisting in the air and coming down with the ball over Trevon Diggs, was pretty spectacular. Robinson was wide open on his touchdown, but Wilson was under heavy pressure and let the ball go just before it hit home. And the second Nabers touchdown was a fantastic throw and catch, and it capped what was, again, a 25-second touchdown drive to take the lead after Dallas had driven for a go-ahead score of its own. Were it not for the Giants' defense collapsing on the ensuing drive, that would've been a game-winner.
What's next
The Cowboys improved to 1-1 with this win. They'll take on the 0-2 Bears next week in Chicago before welcoming Micah Parsons and the Packers back to AT&T Stadium the following week.
The Giants are 0-2 and could be facing some tough questions soon. Brian Daboll was livid all day and rightfully so, but he could be the one who comes under fire in the coming weeks. He and his team host the Chiefs and Chargers over the next two weeks, and things could get ugly if they can't pull off an upset win in one of those two games.
Russell Wilson tried for yet another moon ball completion down the field but he left it way too far inside and basically threw it right to Donovan Wilson. It was only second down. He didn't have to let this one go. That's his first big mistake of the day and it could prove very, very costly for the Giants.
After Dak was sacked on first down, George Pickens was called for a questionable offensive pass interference penalty and set the Cowboys back significantly on the drive. The Giants held the fort and forced another punt, and now they'll have another chance to drive for a game-winning score. They're set up with pretty good field position to do it.
Big missed opportunity for the Giants as Russell Wilson tried to double-clutch a throw on second-and-3 but let the ball go and it went backwards for a 14-yard loss. He tried to hit another deep ball on the next snap but overthrew his man by several yards. Cowboys get the ball back with good field position.
Jalen Tolbert's third-and-10 drop ends the Cowboys' overtime-opening drive. Tight coverage from Dru Phillips but the throw hit Tolbert's hands. Russell Wilson and Co. now have a chance to go win the game.
Brock Hoffman is now in at center for Dallas.
Dak Prescott leads the field goal drive to tie the game. Brandon Aubrey, naturally, drilled a field goal from 64 yards out like it was nothing. We are headed to overtime. What a crazy game.
According to CBS Sports research, that's the longest field goal to send a game to overtime in NFL history. Of course it is. Aubrey is a machine.
Russell Wilson throws ANOTHER moon-ball touchdown to Malik Nabers. My god. What a throw and catch over the top of double coverage. And now Dallas has just 25 seconds to try to drive for a game-tying field goal.
New Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens couldn't have picked a better time for his first Dallas touchdown. His six-yard receiving touchdown gives the Cowboys a 34-30 lead over the Giants with 52 seconds left to play. The Giants have one timeout left.
Dak Prescott just engineered a fantastic touchdown drive to take the lead. Gorgeous back-shoulder throw to George Pickens at the goal line to get the Cowboys on the board. The Giants will have 52 seconds to stage a comeback, and they need a touchdown because Dallas is up by 4.
New York should think about using its timeouts here now that the Cowboys are down by the 10-yard line. They want to make sure they have enough time left if Dallas scores to tie the game or take the lead.
Dallas looked like it was about to go three-and-oiut and give the ball right back to the Giants, but Dak found Jalen Tolbert over the middle for a nice gain to convert on fourth-and-4. You're never gonna believe this, but there was a Giants penalty (pass interference) on the play that was declined. Cowboys are moving coming out of the two-minute warning.
Wan'Dale Robinson has absolutely TORCHED the Cowboys today. He just got turned loose on a seam route from the slot and scored on fourth-and-4 to give the Giants the lead. He has 8 catches for 142 yards and a touchdown. Monster game. Giants back up by 3.
Dart came in for a short-yardage play for the second time in this game. He ran a zone read and slipped while trying to take the ball around the edge. Loss of yards. Rough play for the Giants as they try to re-take the lead. It was followed by a Malik Nabers drop on a slightly inaccurate pass by Russell Wilson.
First it was Javonte Williams finding the end zone for the Cowboys and now it's the backup running back in Sanders. He had a huge fumble in scoring territory last week against the Eagles, so this is a bit of redemption for him and it puts the Cowboys back up by four points, 27-23.
Lamb is finally making things happen for Dallas with three catches already on this drive that has the Cowboys set up just inside the red zone and looking to re-take the lead. He only had two grabs all day prior to this possession.
Jaxson Dart checked in at QB for the New York Giants, and rookie RB Cam Skattebo benefitted greatly. He ripped off a 24-yard run to get down to the one on Dart's first play in the game, and then he capped the Giants' drive on the next play with a one-yard TD. Giants now lead 23-20 with 12:07 left to play. It will be interesting to see if that was just a red zone wrinkle or if Dart will get more run today.
A few big plays and a pass interference penalty get the Giants down to the goal line, where Cam Skattebo takes it into the end zone for his first career touchdown. He also had the run to get the Giants down to the 1-yard line, and they rewarded him with the goal line carry. Giants back in the lead.
KaVontae Turpin (neck injury) is questionable to return for the Dallas Cowboys. Turpin's four catches today vs. the New York Giants tie a career high. He has 47 yards and a touchdown this afternoon.
After a false start to open the quarter, Dak Prescott narrowly avoided a sack on third-and-long. He scrambled for a few yards and it set up another Brandon Aubrey field goal. The Cowboys are back to their four-point lead, 20-16.
According to reporters on scene, Cowboys WR/KR KaVontae Turpin is headed to the locker room. No word on the issue just yet.
ANOTHER penalty on the Giants. This time it's Paulson Adebo very obviously interfering with George Pickens up the right sideline. It's the second PI call Pickens has drawn today.
The Giants have taken 12 penalties for 122 yards, and they have had FIVE penalties wiped off the board either by being declined or through offsetting penalties. They just had another one on the last Dak Prescott completion to Jake Ferguson over the middle. Brian Daboll has been livid all day and rightfully so.
After the huge play to Slayton, Russell Wilson had to throw it out of bounds while scrambling away from pressure twice. Giants lined up like they were going for it on fourth-and-5 but took a delay of game instead and settled for a field goal to make it a 17-16 game. They've had several missed opportunities in Dallas territory today.
Slayton was working with Kaiir Elam on the right sideline and Elam just let Slayton run right by him for a huge gain. Giants set up in the red zone very quickly after the Dallas score.
After George Pickens drew a pass interference penalty on a slot fade up the right sideline, Williams broke a tackle near the line of scrimmage and scampered 30 yards to the end zone. That's his third touchdown run of the season and it gives the Cowboys their first lead of the afternoon. Giants definitely regret not building a bigger lead with their excellent first two drives of the game.
New York failed to take advantage of the Dallas turnover. On fourth-and-2 inside the red zone, Russell Wilson's pass intended for Cam Skattebo -- which would have converted for the first down -- was dropped. Big missed opportunity for the Giants and big break for the Cowboys.
Dru Phillips makes up for his earlier mistakes with a diving interception on Dak Prescott. He was looking for CeeDee Lamb on a bender over the middle of the field and it was just not a smart throw. Arguably into double coverage with the safety coming in behind CeeDee. Phillips made a great play on the ball.
More penalties, a couple nice completions, a near-interception, another CeeDee Lamb drop... and a mismanaged clock at the end of the drive. It ends without points for Dallas, which trails 13-10 at halftime. Cowboys will get the ball coming out of the half.
Dallas finally gets into the end zone here, with Dak finding KaVontae Turpin on a free play (ANOTHER Giants penalty that this time gets declined). Turpin smoked Dru Phillips on the route. Phillips took the terrible penalty on Lamb earlier in the drive. Rough possession for him.
