The Los Angeles Chargers finally removed the Kansas City Chiefs' monkey off their back. Los Angeles snapped its seven-game losing streak against the kings of the AFC West with a 27-21 victory.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (318 yards and three touchdowns on 25 of 34 passing) and wide receiver Quentin Johnson (79 yards and two touchdowns on five catches) elevated Los Angeles' offense to new heights. Surprisingly, Herbert iced the game with legs, scrambling for a 19-yard gain on a third-and-14 from his own 34-yard-line to get the clock down to the two-minute warning.
A few things along the margins ended up being the difference in the Chargers' victory Friday night. Chiefs starting wide receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder) was knocked out of the game when he and Travis Kelce collided on crossing routes on the game's opening third down.
Kansas City was unable to get much going through the air until the second half. Even when the Chiefs were able to get in the end zone, which they did twice in the second half -- an 11-yard scramble by Patrick Mahomes and a 37-yard passing touchdown on a fake wide receiver screen pass to tight end Travis Kelce -- they were unable to connect on their PATs. Mahomes finished with 258 yards passing and a touchdown on 24 of 39 passing, and he led the Chiefs in rushing with 57 yards and a touchdown on six carries.
Kicker Harrison Butker missed a PAT wide right that would have tied the game at 13 with 8:05 left in the third quarter, and then Mahomes' two-point conversion attempt was knocked into the ground at the line of scrimmage. That allowed the Chargers to maintain a 20-18 lead with 12:04 left to play. Herbert's second touchdown toss to Johnston from 23 yards out with 5:02 left to play provided a wide enough margin that the Los Angeles defense didn't relinquish.
