Bills vs. Dolphins takeaways: Josh Allen, James Cook, Terrel Bernard power Buffalo to 31-21 win

It may not have been the most dominant performance by the Bills, but it ended just like almost all of their meetings with the Dolphins have recently: with a win. Buffalo started fast offensively and finished strong defensively with a Terrel Bernard interception of Tua Tagovailoa for a 31-21 win, its seventh straight over its AFC East rival.

Josh Allen, who threw three touchdown passes, is now 14-2 against Miami, which ties Dak Prescott (14-2 vs. Giants) for the most wins over a single opponent among active quarterbacks. He's also 8-0 all-time on Thursday, the best record by a starting quarterback on any day of the week since quarterback starts became official in 1950.

The Dolphins (0-3) got on the board first via a 2-yard Ollie Gordon plunge, but the Bills (3-0) answered with consecutive touchdown drives. First, James Cook led the way down the field before Allen found Dalton Kincaid for a 20-yard touchdown. After a Miami three-and-out, the hosts cruised down the field again, and this time, Allen found a different tight end -- Jackson Hawes -- for a touchdown. It was just the second time in Allen's career that he's thrown multiple touchdown passes to tight ends in the same half.

It might have been easy for the Dolphins, already 0-2 this season and playing on the road on a short week, to go away. They did anything but. Perhaps invigorated by Matt Prater's short missed field goal, Miami embarked on a 16-play, 71-yard drive culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Tua Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle with just eight seconds remaining. It was Miami's longest touchdown drive (in terms of plays) since 2012.

Buffalo went right down the field to open the second half, with Cook hammering into the end zone from 2 yards away before both defenses seemed to settle in.

Finally, down 21-14, Miami's offense rediscovered its rhythm. Tagovailoa capped the nine-play, 67-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill, but the play of the drive was a gutsy fourth-and-4 conversion to Waddle, who outran Tre'Davious White on a crossing route and picked up 15 yards. Three plays later, Hill was celebrating, having tied the game again.

Once again, Buffalo had an answer on the next drive. This time, though, the Bills even got some help from their opponent. After being stopped near midfield, the Bills punted the ball away. However, Dolphins defensive lineman Zach Sieler, in an attempt to block the punt, ran into Cameron Johnston and was flagged for roughing the kicker. Five plays later, Khalil Shakir took an Allen swing pass 15 yards for a touchdown and a 28-21 lead.

Still, Miami was right there … until it wasn't. Tagovailoa and Co. moved all the way to the Buffalo 21-yard line before Bernard stepped in front of a short Tagovailoa pass and made the easy interception. Matt Prater converted a late field goal to seal the deal.

Here are our takeaways:

Josh Allen leads efficient, but not explosive, Bills attack

Allen's box score numbers weren't anything superhuman: 22 for 28 passing, 213 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and no interceptions plus another 25 rushing yards. But he made the plays he needed to and bailed Buffalo out of several bad situations. On a first and 20 after a holding penalty, Allen rushed for 19 yards to get things back on track. Cook finished the drive with a touchdown.

Later, on a second and 16, Allen calmly scanned the field before finding Elijah Moore for a 30-yard catch and run. The Prater field goal then put the game out of reach.

Allen spread out his 22 completions to nine different receivers.

"We just got that 'Everybody eats' mentality," Cook told the broadcast after the game. "When anybody touch the ball, it could be something big that happens. We keep holding on into the 'Everybody eats' mentality, and this offense [is] gonna be great."

It was a very strong performance, and one that shows the greatest growth over his career. He doesn't have to be Superman. He has a strong offensive line, a strong running game (Cook had 108 yards on the ground) and a variety of weapons who can get it done with the ball in their hands. Allen did not have a turnover, and the Bills have now gone eight straight games (including playoffs) without a turnover, tied for the longest streak since 1940.

Bills defense does enough

Down top defensive lineman Ed Oliver (ankle) and top linebacker Matt Milano (pec), the Bills defense bent but didn't break in the key moment. Bernard said he saw the play he intercepted on film, and linebackers coach Al Holcomb had told him he'd get his chance.

"Terrel Bernard stepped up in a big moment of the game," Allen said postgame. "We needed him to make a play, needed someone to do it. He's our captain for a reason. He showed that tonight."

Still, both key absences were quite noticeable. The Dolphins had 130 yards on 25 rushes, and Tagovailoa was not sacked. Defensive-minded head coach Sean McDermott won't be happy with either of those categories. But as Allen said, the Bills needed a play, and Bernard delivered.

Also give major credit to the Bills' defensive backs for keeping things in front of them and tackling well. De'Von Achane led Miami with seven receptions, but they went for just 29 yards. The Dolphins' longest play was just 19 yards.

Tagovailoa's 4.3 yards per attempt were his fifth-lowest in any game in his career, and his 1.3 air yards per completion were his lowest in a game he finished.

Dolphins 0-3 but still fighting; mistakes too much to overcome

The Bills are 0-3 for the first time since 2019, but this did not look like a team that's given up. Not even close. Except for one throw, Tagovailoa played solidly, even improvising for several key conversions. His touchdown tosses to Waddle and Hill were right on the money. When he's in rhythm -- again, except for one play -- he's very good, and Waddle, Hill, Achane and Malik Washington form a solid group of playmakers.

The secondary, which has been devastated by injuries, fought hard, too. Jack Jones in particular played a strong game. The issue is the offense's lack of explosiveness provided no room for error, and when Sieler roughed the kicker and Tagovailoa threw an interception, that was all Buffalo needed.

The Bills host the Saints next week, and the Dolphins host the Jets on Monday Night Football.

FINAL: Bills 31, Dolphins 21

Make it seven regular-season wins in a row for the Bills over the Dolphins. Buffalo got three touchdown passes from Josh Allen plus a pair of crucial errors from Miami -- a roughing the kicker on Zach Sieler that led to a touchdown and a late Tua Tagovailoa interception picked off by Terrel Bernard -- to get to 3-0.

James Cook finished with 108 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle both had touchdown catches for Miami (0-3).

INTERCEPTION: Terrel Bernard picks off Tua Tagovailoa as Dolphins were driving

And there's the killer turnover from Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins' quarterback -- who had played such a clean game all night in terms of ball security -- was late on a short throw, and Terrel Bernard stepped in front of it for a clutch interception with Miami knocking on the door of the red zone.

Tagovailoa had four turnovers in his first two games, and his fifth of the season is a brutal blow. Credit Bernard for reading the play expertly and making no mistake once he got in the passing lane, but that's an awful play from Tagovailoa.

TOUCHDOWN BILLS: Khalil Shakir finds the end zone

Aided by a brutal (from Miami's point of view) roughing the kicker on Zach Sieler, the Bills are into the end zone again, this time via a Khalil Shakir catch and run.

Buffalo has now answered all three of Miami's touchdown drives with touchdowns of its own.

Another killer penalty by the Dolphins

Dolphins defensive lineman Zach Sieler came just a few inches away from blocking Cameron Johnston's punt. Instead, he just missed, crashed into Johnston and got flagged for roughing the kicker. The Miami defense, which has done a really good job in the second half, heads back onto the field with the score tied at 21.

TOUCHDOWN DOLPHINS: Miami draws even, 21-21, on Tyreek Hill TD

The Dolphins refuse to go away and just tied the game at 21 apiece. Tyreek Hill beat Christian Benford, and Tua Tagovailoa delivered an accurate pass while fading away.

Credit Miami's defense for keeping things close as the offense has been up and down. After scoring on their opening drive after halftime, the Bills have punted twice in a row and gained just one first down across those two drives. Miami's run defense has been much stouter since halftime.

UPDATE: Christian Benford returns

Benford received medical attention both on the field and on the bench after colliding with Taylor Rapp, but he returned for the next series. That should come with a huge sigh of relief for Bills fans; Benford is the team's top cover guy on the outside.

Bills CB Christian Benford injured

Christian Benford is down and receiving medical attention after suffering an apparent injury when defending Tyreek Hill. The Bills' cornerback ran deep downfield with the Dolphins speedster, who went up for a jump ball but failed to bring it down. Benford appeared to be on the wrong end of some friendly fire between himself and safety Taylor Rapp as the ball came down.

TOUCHDOWN BILLS: Dolphins' errors come back to bite them

The Bills are still yet to punt, and now they have a 21-14 lead courtesy of a 2-yard touchdown run by James Cook.

The Dolphins had multiple opportunities to get off the field but couldn't take advantage. On a first and 20, they lost contain on Allen, who scampered up the middle of the field for 19 yards, getting Buffalo right back in favorable down and distance. Then, on first and goal, Jordyn Brooks sacked Allen but proceeded to take the star quarterback to the turf well after the whistles had blown. Cook scored on the next play.

Halftime notes: Bills 14, Dolphins 14

The Bills' offense has run smoothly throughout the entire first half, but the Dolphins have done a really good job limiting explosive plays. Buffalo has just one play that's gone for over 20 yards -- a 26-yard James Cook run -- and that's forced the Bills to be methodical rather than explosive. They had just three drives in the first half.

LEADERS:

Josh Allen: 11-13 passing, 97 yards, 2 TD
Tua Tagovailoa: 12-18 passing, 66 yards, 1 TD
James Cook: 8 carries, 73 yards
De'Von Achane: 6 carries, 35 yards
Tyreek Hill: 4 receptions, 44 yards
Dalton Kincaid: 3 receptions, 41 yards, 1 TD

TOUCHDOWN DOLPHINS: Tua Tagovailoa making plays as Dolphins tie game at halftime

The Dolphins' defense finally got a stop courtesy of a Bradley Chubb sack and a Matt Prater missed field goal, and the offense finally got going again.

Tua Tagovailoa -- not exactly known for his out-of-structure creation -- showed just that, avoiding a free rusher and finding Tyreek Hill on a third and 12 and later running for a first down on a third and 7. Overall, the Dolphins converted on five third downs before Tagovailoa found Jaylen Waddle for a touchdown with eight seconds left. Really, really impressive drive.

Bills' tight ends coming up big

This is just the second time in his career in which Josh Allen has thrown multiple touchdown passes to tight ends in a single half. Back in Week 3 of 2020 against the Rams, he threw first-half touchdowns to Tyler Kroft and Lee Smith

TOUCHDOWN BILLS: Josh Allen doing it all, Dolphins struggling to find answers

He can pass, he can run, he can ... flick? Josh Allen has tossed his second touchdown pass of the night, this one on a creative flick of the wrist to Jackson Hawes.

The Bills' offense is firing on all cylinders; Allen has just one incompletion. Buffalo has faced just two third downs: a third and 2 and a third and 1. Miami has to find a way to get Buffalo behind the sticks to have a chance.

Bills offense having its way, driving again at end of first quarter

The Bills are once again deep into Dolphins' territory as the first quarter comes to an end.

It's been mostly the James Cook show, as he has 39 yards rushing and 5 yards receiving, and the Bills' offensive line is getting tremendous push. Add in an 11-yard rush by Elijah Moore and 5 yards from Ty Johnson, and Buffalo already has 55 yards on the ground, using a variety of runs and personnel packages to get Dolphins defenders' heads spinning.

TOUCHDOWN DOLPHINS: Miami takes 7-0 lead via Ollie Gordon II

After a Dee Eskridge kickoff return into Bills territory, Miami pieced together a very nice drive powered by De'Von Achane and capped by a short touchdown run by Ollie Gordon II.

It's just the second opening-drive touchdown by Miami in its last 14 games against Buffalo.

Josh Allen's historic success vs. Dolphins

It's safe to say Josh Allen has enjoyed his time playing against the Dolphins, accumulating a 13-2 record against his AFC East foe. He could take that success to another level tonight:

  • He can match Dak Prescott (14-2 vs. Giants) for the most wins against a single opponent by an active quarterback.
  • He's 7-0 on Thursday, tied with Carson Wentz for the best mark since 1950, when quarterback starts began being tracked.
  • He has 44 career games with at least one passing touchdown and at least one rushing touchdown. With another one tonight, he'd tie Cam Newton for the most in NFL history.

Bills inactives: Buffalo without two key defenders

The Bills are heavy favorites tonight, but they'll have to actually seal the deal without a pair of key defenders. Linebacker Matt Milano (pec) and defensive tackle Ed Oliver (ankle) are officially out.

The good news for Buffalo, however, is that cornerback Taron Johnson is active. He had been listed as questionable with a quad injury.
