  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Shelved with swollen thumb

The Diamondbacks placed DeSclafani on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to right thumb inflammation, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Arizona recalled right-hander Casey Kelly from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move, and if he's not needed in relief over the next four days, he could end up taking DeSclafani's spot in the rotation the next time it comes up Sunday in Colorado. DeSclafani initially worked in relief after joining the Diamondbacks in mid-June, but he had started in his last three appearances and logged a 5.99 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 7:5 K:BB in 9.2 innings during that stretch.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Experiences thumb soreness

DeSclafani was removed from Tuesday's start after three innings due to soreness in his right thumb, MLB.com reports. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three in a no-decision against the Rangers. DeSclafani attempted to pitch through the soreness but was yanked after three innings and 52 pitches. The right-hander said following the game that he wasn't sure if a stint on the injured list would be needed. The Diamondbacks are expected to evaluate DeSclafani on Wednesday.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Fares well in short outing

DeSclafani allowed three hits and struck out four batters over 4.1 scoreless innings in a no-decision against San Diego on Wednesday. DeSclafani jumped into the Diamondbacks' rotation at the beginning of August and struggled in his subsequent start, giving up four runs over 2.1 frames. He was much better Wednesday, limiting the Padres to three hits and no runs. DeSclafani threw 71 pitches (50 strikes) in the appearance, so he doesn't appear to be ready to handle a full starter's workload quite yet. Nonetheless, the right-hander may have earned himself the opportunity to continue being a part of Arizona's rotation. If that's the case, his next start is lined up to come against Texas on the road.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Receiving another start

DeSclafani is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Padres at Chase Field. After working out of the bullpen in each of his previous three appearances, DeSclafani joined the Arizona rotation this past weekend as a replacement for Merrill Kelly, who was shipped to the Rangers ahead of the trade deadline. While making his first start for Arizona since July 6 on Friday in Sacramento, DeSclafani was dealt a loss while giving up four earned runs on five hits and three walks over 2.1 innings against the Athletics. Despite the rough showing, DeSclafani will get at least one more chance to solidify his spot in the Arizona rotation. Another poor outing, however, could prompt the Diamondbacks to go in a different direction with their No. 5 starter.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Poor showing in start

DeSclafani (1-2) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while failing to record a strikeout over 2.1 innings, taking the loss Friday versus the Athletics. DeSclafani threw 59 pitches (33 strikes) in this outing, one off his season high from July 6 versus the Royals. It was a poor start for the veteran right-hander, as he allowed all four runs in the first inning. DeSclafani is still relatively stretched out after serving as a multi-inning reliever a majority of the time since he signed with Arizona on June 15. He's struggled to a 4.91 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB through 25.2 innings across nine appearances (two starts). It's unclear if he'll be the rest-of-season answer in the rotation following the Diamondbacks' deal that sent Merrill Kelly to the Rangers on Thursday. DeSclafani is tentatively scheduled to make his next start at home versus the Padres.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Logs four scoreless

DeSclafani (1-1) allowed two walks and struck out three over four scoreless and hitless innings to earn the win over Pittsburgh on Friday. Three Diamondback pitchers combined to limit the Pirates to one hit over 11 innings in a 1-0 victory. DeSclafani was the middleman, throwing scoreless frames from the seventh through 10th innings before Kevin Ginkel closed it out. DeSclafani has worked as a multi-inning reliever and pitched at least two innings in his seven relief appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Saddled with loss Sunday

DeSclafani (0-1) took the loss in Sunday's game against Kansas City, conceding four runs on four hits and no walks over four innings with six strikeouts. The veteran right-hander tossed 60 pitches in this appearance, as he was called upon to make his first big-league start since July 18, 2023 when he was a Giant. DeSclafani allowed solo homers to Bobby Witt and Salvador Perez in the fourth before fading in the fifth, when he was charged with two additional earned runs. DeSclafani appeared to only be making a spot start in place of Zac Gallen on Sunday in order to give Gallen additional rest after he produced an ugly 6.29 ERA in 58.2 frames over his last 10 starts; however, given Gallen's unsteady performance, DeSclafani could garner additional rotation turns. The 35-year-old now sports a 6.08 ERA across 13.1 total innings this season largely because he's yielded five long balls, but he has also pitched to a solid 1.13 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Getting start Sunday

DeSclafani will start Sunday's game against the Royals at Chase Field, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. The 35-year-old righty has made four appearances out of the bullpen since joining Arizona in mid-June, but he'll make his first start of the season Sunday. During his time in the bullpen, DeSclafani logged a 4.82 ERA through 9.1 innings, but he could be in position for a bounce-back outing against a Kansas City offense that owns a .666 OPS on the season (26th in MLB). Though he's worked three innings or fewer out of the Arizona bullpen, DeSclafani should be able to provide a little bit of length beyond that Sunday after tossing six innings in his final start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees organization on June 10 prior to being granted his release from his minor-league deal.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Collects three-inning save

DeSclafani picked up the save in Monday's 10-0 win versus the White Sox, allowing two walks and no hits over three scoreless innings. He struck out four. The grizzled veteran secured his first career save with this performance, as he generated an impressive 11 whiffs out of 45 total pitches. DeSclafani hadn't pitched since 2023 before joining Arizona on June 15. Following this appearance, the 35-year-old now sports a 6.14 ERA through 7.1 total frames and looks set to continue working in long relief for the Diamondbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Put to work in relief Sunday

DeSclafani allowed two earned runs on three hits and struck out two over 2.1 innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's 8-2 loss to San Diego. DeSclafani was put to work immediately after signing a one-year contract with the Diamondbacks on Sunday. Although he worked as a starter in the Yankees organization before being granted his release last week, DeSclafani is expected to work in long relief for Arizona for the time being. He could be the next man up to join the rotation, however, if the Diamondbacks lose one of their five starters to an injury at any point.

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Lands in Arizona

DeSclafani signed a major-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Sunday. The right-hander recently opted out of his minor-league deal with the Yankees and was able to quickly secure a big-league contract. DeSclafani last pitched in the majors in 2023 with the Giants and had a 4.88 ERA across 99.2 innings. He posted similar numbers in five starts at Triple-A with the Yankees, finishing with a 4.50 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 20:9 K:BB over 20 innings. Expect the 35-year-old to work out of the bullpen as a multi-inning relief option to begin his time with Arizona.

  • Yankees' Anthony DeSclafani: Looking healthy at Triple-A

DeSclafani (elbow) has turned in a 5.23 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB in 10.1 innings over his three starts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since signing a minor-league deal with the Yankees on May 13. Though DeSclafani remained unsigned throughout spring training while he continued to recover from the flexor tendon surgery he underwent in March 2024, the Yankees felt comfortable enough with his health to immediately insert him into the Triple-A rotation once he put pen to paper on a deal. The veteran righty turned in his best start yet in his most recent outing for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday, striking out four over four scoreless innings. He'll continue to provide organizational starting depth at the Triple-A level but could be in the mix for a call-up if a rotation spot opens up for the Yankees later on this season.

  • Yankees' Anthony DeSclafani: Joins Yankees on MiLB pact

DeSclafani (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees on Tuesday, Conor Foley of YES Network reports. DeSclafani missed all of last season due to flexor tendon repair surgery on his right elbow. More than 13 months after his procedure, it's unclear where he is in his rehab process, but the Yankees evidently feel good about his current status and will send him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to continue building up.

  • Twins' Anthony DeSclafani: Undergoes season-ending surgery

Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey revealed Saturday that DeSclafani will be out for the season after undergoing flexor tendon surgery on his right elbow, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The silver lining is that DeSclafani did not undergo Tommy John surgery, but the right-hander will be sidelined for the season. DeSclafani experienced right elbow soreness at the beginning of March, and while he was able to throw some bullpen sessions and a minor-league game, he will ultimately not play in 2024. Louie Varland is now cemented as the Twins' fifth starting pitcher.

  • Twins' Anthony DeSclafani: Opens on 60-day IL

The Twins placed DeSclafani (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday. After being acquired from the Mariners in January, DeSclafani was expected to open the season as a back-end starter for the Twins, but he was diagnosed with a right elbow strain following an appearance in a minor-league spring training game in mid-March and will be headed for an extended absence. The Twins haven't offered up a firm timeline for his return, but after landing on the 60-day IL, DeSclafani will be sidelined for at least two months.

  • Twins' Anthony DeSclafani: IL bound with forearm strain

Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said DeSclafani will open the season on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. According to Helfand, Falvey adds that DeSclafani will have his injury assessed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, after which the Twins should have a better idea on a treatment plan for the right-hander. DeSclafani had entered spring training as a frontrunner for a back-end spot in the Minnesota rotation, but he didn't make any Cactus League appearances while the Twins eased him back after his 2023 campaign was cut short by a right elbow flexor strain. DeSclafani was able to cover 1.2 innings in a minor-league spring training game over the weekend, but his forearm apparently didn't respond well. Though DeSclafani will be eligible to return from the IL around the middle of April, given the nature of his injury and his history of arm trouble, it wouldn't be surprising if he required a long-term absence, regardless of whether or not Meister recommends surgery. Louie Varland now looks to be the leading candidate to open the season as Minnesota's No. 5 starter.

  • Twins' Anthony DeSclafani: Throws in minor league game

DeSclafani (elbow) threw 1.2 innings in a Triple-A spring training game Saturday with three strikeouts and two walks, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. DeSclafani hasn't appeared in a major-league spring training game, but that could come in the next week. DeSclafani has made nice progress since feeling soreness in his right elbow at the beginning of the month, but it's not certain he'll be ready for Opening Day despite this progress. His primary competition for the fifth spot in the rotation, Louie Varland, has thrown 11 scoreless innings with an 11:1 K:BB this spring.

  • Twins' Anthony DeSclafani: Pitching in minors game next

DeSclafani (elbow) got through another bullpen session without issue Thursday and his next step is to pitch in a minor-league game, Nick Nelson of Twins Daily reports. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli wasn't sure which day the minor-league appearance would take place, but it's imminent. DeSclafani has made nice progress since feeling soreness in his right elbow at the beginning of the month, but his availability for Opening Day remains very much in question. His primary competition for the fifth spot in the rotation, Louie Varland, has spun 11 scoreless innings with an 11:1 K:BB this spring.

  • Twins' Anthony DeSclafani: Completes bullpen session

DeSclafani (elbow) felt good after a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The veteran right-hander has been slowed by right elbow soreness, but he's building up his workload and could soon face live hitters. DeSclafani will meet with the training staff Saturday to determine the next steps in his recovery.

  • Twins' Anthony DeSclafani: Delayed by elbow soreness

DeSclafani has been slowed in Twins' camp by right elbow soreness, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. DeSclafani felt some soreness following his second live batting practice session. While he's resumed long toss and hopes to return to a mound in a few days, the setback is a troubling development given that he missed much of the 2023 campaign with a flexor issue. For what it's worth, trainer Nick Paparesta said Friday that DeSclafani still has time to be ready for Opening Day. The righty is competing with Louie Varland for the fifth spot in the rotation.
