Report: Giants considering Lyle Overbay as bench bat
With Aubrey Huff struggling, Giants could search for power from Lyle Overbay, recently cut by Diamondbacks.
The Giants have considered first baseman Lyle Overbay as a potential bench bat, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.
Overbay fizzled in July for the Diamondbacks, recording just two hits in his final 25 at-bats with the team. Even with the slump, though, Overbay owns a .292/.367/.448 line on the season and has always been a formidable opponent for right-handed pitchers, with a career .824 OPS in the split.
The Giants have been awful in pinch-hitting roles, with just a .160/.234/.244 line off the bench. Their OPS+ in the split is just 43, meaning Giants pinch hitters have produced less than half the offense of pinch hitters league-wide.
Ostensibly, Overbay would replace one of the worst offenders for the Giants in that split: Aubrey Huff. On top of his atrocious .148/.284/.246 overall line, Huff is 1-for-13 in pinch-hitting opportunities.
