The Rangers have designated utility infielder Luis Hernandez for assignment, the club announced Monday.

Hernandez served as a utility infielder for the Rangers as Michael Young was on the paternity list, playing in two games without reaching base. Without Hernandez, Young serves as the Rangers' only real backup at shortstop and second base -- positions that he used to play well, but at 35 he wouldn't be well suited to handle the role full-time should Elvis Andrus or Ian Kinsler suffer an injury.

As such, top prospect Jurickson Profar will likely come up to the Rangers when rosters expand to 40 on Sept. 1. One scout told CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman he thinks Profar's upside is second only to Mike Trout's among young players right now. The 19-year-old owns a .284/.369/.458 line at Double-A Frisco.
