Padres designate Kip Wells for assignment, select Cory Burns
Kip Wells's comeback in San Diego ends, and the Padres select minor leaguer Cory Burns and his fantastic minor league numbers.
The Padres have designated Kip Wells for assignment and selected the contract of Corey Burns from Triple-A Tucson, the club announced Friday.
Wells, 35, pitched in the majors for the first time since 2009 with San Diego this season, recording a 4.58 ERA in seven starts covering 37.1 innings. Wells walked more batters (20) than he struck out (19).
Burns, 24, has a 2.63 ERA for Tucson this season with 77 strikeouts against 16 walks (an excellent 4.81 K/BB) after notching a 2.11 ERA for Cleveland in Double-A last season. The righty owns a 5.2 K/BB across four minor league seasons. The Padres acquired Burns from the Indians for Aaron Cunningham last December.
