Indians recall Roberto Hernandez (aka Fausto Carmona), place Josh Tomlin on DL
Roberto Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, will return Wednesday as Josh Tomlin heads to the DL with elbow inflammation.
The Indians will reinstate starter Roberto Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, to start Wednesday against the Angels. He will replace Josh Tomlin, whom the team placed on the 15-day DL with right elbow inflammation, the club announced Tuesday via Twitter.
Hernandez last pitched for the Indians in 2011, posting a 5.25 ERA in 188.2 innings with a 1.82 K/BB. He is an extreme ground baller, with a 58.6% ground ball rate for his career and 54.8% last season.
Tomlin has struggled mightily this season, posting a 6.36 ERA and 5.09 FIP, largely thanks to a massive 1.6 HR/9. His strikeout rate has dipped below 5.0 per nine innings. Hitters are making consistent contact off the 27-year-old and making it count. Tomlin lasted just 1.1 innings in his last start against Boson Aug. 12, allowing seven runs on five hits.
