World Series Game 1 score, analysis: Blue Jays blow out Dodgers with history-making Addison Barger grand slam

The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 (box score) on Friday night in Game 1 of the World Series. The Dodgers struck first and the two sides eventually entered the bottom of the sixth tied, but the Blue Jays scored nine runs behind a history-making Addison Barger grand slam and turn a tight contest into a boat race.

The Blue Jays now lead the best-of-seven series by a 1-0 margin.

Here are four takeaways from Game 1 worth knowing:

1. Blue Jays' offense goes off in historic fashion

As noted in the introduction, the Blue Jays had an eventful bottom of the sixth inning, plating nine runs in what was the most productive offensive inning in the World Series since 1968.

Six consecutive Blue Jays reached base to begin the frame. Bo Bichette walked, Alejandro Kirk singled, and Daulton Varsho reached on a hit by pitch. Ernie Clement, Nathan Lukes, and Andrés Giménez then each plated a run with a knock or walk to bring the Toronto lead to 5-2. That set the table for Addison Barger to bat for Davis Schneider and provide the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history:

The Blue Jays still weren't done at that point. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled and Alejandro Kirk homered, extending the lead to 11-2. For as good as the Dodgers offense is, even they weren't up for the task of closing that gap over three innings.

2. Dodgers' bullpen, rotation dependency burns them

Throughout the postseason, the Dodgers have been able to leverage their strong rotation as a shield against overexposing their leaky bullpen. That formula had worked throughout the Dodgers' empathetic series wins against the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers. Indeed, the Dodgers had seen their starters work at least six innings in eight of 10 contests.

Understandably, manager Dave Roberts tried to push Blake Snell through the sixth inning in Game 1. It didn't work. Snell instead created a mess by issuing a walk, allowing a single, and then hitting a batter. At that point, Roberts went to the bullpen, calling upon youngster Emmet Sheehan. As the above subhead suggests, things moved south quickly. By the time the half-inning concluded, the Dodgers were down 11-2, making the game's outcome a fait accompli.

The question now for the Dodgers is whether Snell's misstep will prove to be a one-off, or if it's a sign that their rotation has been overworked throughout the month. Yoshinobu Yamamoto will do his part to provide an answer on Saturday night.

3. Bichette returns, also makes history

Bo Bichette rejoined the Blue Jays lineup for the first time since September 6, when he injured his knee. Bichette was back in his usual cleanup slot, albeit while playing an unusual position. For the first time in his big-league career, he received the nod at second base (as opposed to his customary shortstop).

"Just kind of how he was moving around and his comfort level with it," manager John Schneider explained before Game 1. "He was pretty open with me about just, Hey, I can do this if need be, both with -- in terms of kind of taking little bit of the physicality of the game off of him and looking at what (Giménez) is doing at short too."

"Yeah, I mean, I think every part of this is a challenge, but I think it would be even if I had been playing," Bichette added. "The World Series is a different animal. Luckily, I've had a lot of time in my life at second base, so I have some experience there. I mean, I feel ready to contribute there."

In turn, Bichette made a slew of history. He, Daulton Varsho, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. became the first trio of former players' sons to start in the World Series for a single team. (Varsho, by the way, became the first lefty batter to homer off Snell since June of 2024.) Additionally, Bichette was the fourth player to make his first career start at a fielding position in the postseason. Here are others:

4. Game 2 up next

The Blue Jays and Dodgers will reconvene Saturday night for Game 2. Same place, same time. The Blue Jays will attempt to build a 2-0 advantage before the series shifts to Los Angeles. Historically, MLB teams that lead 2-0 in a best-of-seven series have won said series more than 80% of the time. Coincidentally, these Blue Jays defeated those overwhelming odds as part of their ALCS win.

World Series Game 1 FINAL: Blue Jays 11, Dodgers 4

Powered by a sixth-inning eruption that turned a tie game into a laugher, the Toronto Blue Jays notched an 11-4 comeback Game 1 victory on Friday night over the Los Angeles Dodgers to take a 1-0 lead in the 2025 World Series. For the Dodgers, the loss was just their second of this postseason.

In support of ace Blake Snell, the Dodgers struck first in the second inning, as they put a run on the board thanks to a Will Smith walk followed later by a pair of singles. In the third, it was a pair of walks followed by a ground-ball single that gave the reigning champions a 2-0 advantage against Toronto and starter Trey Yesavage.

The Blue Jays punched back in the fourth with a game-tying, two-run home run by Daulton Varsho. The booming homer off the batter's eye in center marked the first time this postseason that Snell permitted a hit to a left-handed batter, and during the regular season just two of Varsho's 20 home runs came against lefties.

That, though, was mere prelude to the sixth inning, when the first six Blue Jays hitters reached base, and the team put nine runs on the board. The big blow came on the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history, courtesy of Addison Barger:

Later in the inning, Alejandro Kirk hit a home run of his own to make it 11-2 and all but ensure a Toronto win. Five of those runs were charged to Snell, who had been on a run of dominance since early September.

The Dodgers pulled a bit closer in the seventh with a two-run homer by Shohei Ohtani -- his fourth home run in the last two games -- but the Jays went on to secure the crucial opening win of the series.

Game 2 will be back at Rogers Centre on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET, as Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers opposes Toronto's Kevin Gausman.

Ohtani makes it 11-4

Two-run shot here in the top of the seventh. The middle of the Toronto's bullpen is not especially reliable either. Good thing the offense gave them that huge lead. Ohtani has four home runs in his last two games now.

Braydon Fisher walked the leadoff man on four pitches this inning after the offense threw up a nine-spot last inning. That's a no-no. Still a plenty comfortable lead for Toronto, but now Chris Bassitt is warming. The Blue Jays might have to use one more reliever than they wanted to close this game out.

Now it's 11-2

Alejandro Kirk goes deep. His two-run shot makes this a nine-run inning for Toronto. He had two hits in the inning.

The Blue Jays can really hit and this Dodgers' bullpen is a major sore spot. I reckon this will not be the first crooked number they put up against the bullpen this series.

Addison Barger hits grand slam, Blue Jays up 9-2

The Blue Jays have totally broken this game open. After a "death by a thousand paper cuts" inning to this point, Addison Barger just hit a grand slam.

This was the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history. Barger was pinch hitting for Davis Schneider. The Dodgers countered the move by bringing in lefty Anthony Banda against the lefty-swinging Barger. It didn't work.

The Blue Jays lead 9-2. Holy smokes. The Dodgers only allowed four runs in four games in the NLCS to the Brewers. The Jays have more than doubled that mark and we're still in the sixth inning here in Game 1 of the World Series.

Blue Jays take 5-2 lead

The Blue Jays have their first World Series lead since Joe Carter's 1993 World Series walk-off home run. Ernie Clement came through with an RBI single.

Nathan Lukes followed with a bases-loaded walk, pushing the Jays' lead to 4-2. Andrés Giménez came next and singled home another run. It's 5-2 Blue Jays.

The bases are still loaded with no outs and the top of the order is coming. It's George Springer. Uh oh, Dodgers.

Kiner-Falefa came into pinch-run for Bichette, which improves the speed on the bases and also the defense late in a close game. Bichette clearly isn't moving at 100% following the knee injury.

Leadoff walk for Bichette

This is a pivotal spot in the game. Snell is now over 90 pitches and the Dodgers would love to avoid using their bullpen as long as possible. Also of note: Bichette was just removed for pinch-runner Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Snell is through five innings on 84 pitches. Dave Roberts has been willing to push his starters this postseason (in part because the middle of the bullpen is very shaky), so I'm sure he'll go out to start the sixth inning.

Varsho ties the game at 2-2

Alejandro Kirk began the bottom of the fourth with a long single. Daulton Varsho follows it up with a home run to tie the game at 2-2. Here's a look:

Snell is not an easy at-bat for lefties -- in fact, it's the first homer he's given up to a lefty since last June (though he missed time with injury). Give Varsho credit for beating the odds.

Snell at 56 pitches

He's been efficient since that long first inning. He'll make it rather easily through five innings and maybe six at this pace. It's a big subplot here with the thin Dodgers bullpen missing Alex Vesia.

With runners on first and second, Will Smith comes through with an RBI single and the Dodgers have some insurance, now leading 2-0.

Freddie Freeman was thrown out attempting to get to third base, getting caught in a rundown, so there are now one out. Smith was able to get to second while Freeman was held up.
