The Europeans entered the 2025 Ryder Cup hoping experience would make the difference, and on Friday, they were proven correct as the visitors stormed out to a 3-point lead on the United States. It was the first time Europe has led on U.S. soil after Friday's first day of action since 2004 (when the visitors won 18.5 to 9.5), and captain Luke Donald pushed almost all of the correct buttons across the first two sessions. Meanwhile, the Americans were left wondering whether they need to go to Plan B facing a margin from which no team has come back since 1999.

The performance of the teams' top stars was the name of the game on Day 1. Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy went 3-0-1 for Europe, providing the kind of stability and leadership the team needed on the road from their best players. U.S. captain Keegan Bradley, meanwhile, saw Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau combine to go 0-4-0. Compounding the problem? Some of the pairings he expected to lean on this week are now major question marks.

In the morning foursomes session on Saturday, Bradley opted to stick with three of the same four pairings, only changing out Cameron Young to play with Bryson DeChambeau in place of Justin Thomas. That pairing ended up scoring the only point of the foursomes session for the U.S. as Europe won 3-1 once again to take a 8.5 to 3.5 lead -- all three returning pairs from Friday ultimately lost on Saturday.

That disaster finally forced Bradley to make some changes, though now, it appears to be too little too late. His biggest move was pairing Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau, who had success in 2021 together, with Bradley hoping his top two players can get him a much-needed point this afternoon as they trail by five going into the afternoon session. Europe will bring back three of the four pairings from Friday, as Luke Donald hopes to slam the door on the Americans before Sunday singles. The one change is Tyrrell Hatton (in for Viktor Hovland, who injured himself in foursomes) and Matt Fitzpatrick going out in place of Ludvig Åberg and Rasmus Højgaard after that team got mowed down by the Americans on Friday afternoon.

The team that dominated those two was the pairing of Young and Thomas, who will lead things off for the U.S. against McIlroy and Lowry in a titanic showdown. Then we'll see the Scheffler-DeChambeau pairing against Fleetwood and Rose, as the U.S. looks to its best players to give them early points to provide a glimmer of hope.

J.J. Spaun will get another turn in the afternoon, this time with Xander Schauffele, as Bradley puts Ben Griffin on the bench for all of Saturday. Burns and Cantlay will pair together again after halving their match on Friday, adn will try to put a full point on the board this time around.
