Burdi elected to become a free agent Thursday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
The 32-year-old was removed from Boston's 40-man roster back in August and has decided to exercise his right to free agency. Burdi made four appearances for the Red Sox this season, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings with a 5:2 K:BB.
