The Mets released Villar on Monday.
After parting ways with the Giants in late May, Villar signed a minor-league deal with the Mets and reported to Triple-A Syracuse. The 28-year-old slashed just .200/.324/.348 with six home runs over 185 plate appearances before losing his spot on the Syracuse roster after the organization promoted first baseman Ryan Clifford from Double-A Binghamton to replace him.
