The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers picked up a 38-27 victory over the Austin Peay Governors on Saturday.
The Hilltoppers started the contest off right with 21 first-half points. Austin Peay countered with 17 points. The offense for WKU continued to do well in the second half, scoring another 17 points to put the game away.
QB Austin Reed and WR Malachi Corley were among the main playmakers for WKU as the former passed for four TDs and 280 yards on 34 attempts and the latter snatched three receiving TDs. Western Kentucky's DB Upton Stout got in on the action, too, converting a pick in the second quarter into a touchdown.
WKU's defense was a presence as well, as it got past Austin Peay's offensive line to sack QB Mike DiLiello five times for a total loss of 25 yards. Leading the way was DE JaQues Evans and his 2.5 sacks. Those were the first sacks for Evans.
WR Drae McCray put forth a good effort for the losing side as he caught six passes for two TDs and 90 yards. The game pushed the Governors down to 0-1 and pulled the Hilltoppers up to the reverse at 1-0.
WKU will square off against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors next Sunday at Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. WKU won't have the home-field advantage, but they do enjoy an 11.5-point advantage in the spread. As for Austin Peay, they will face off against the Presbyterian Blue Hose at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday at Fortera Stadium.
