Bowl season is underway, and the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Maryland Terrapins will compete for postseason bragging rights in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium at 2:15 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Both teams might be coming in a bit winded after having run the length of the field multiple times in their most recent games.
The Hokies didn't have too much breathing room in their game with the Virginia Cavaliers four weeks ago, but they still walked away with a 29-24 win. It was another big night for Virginia Tech's QB Braxton Burmeister, who passed for one TD and 141 yards on 14 attempts in addition to picking up 115 yards on the ground and snatching one receiving TD. That nimble footwork stands out as the first time Burmeister has hit the 100-yard rushing mark this season.
Meanwhile, Maryland ran circles around the Rutgers Scarlet Knights four weeks ago, and the extra yardage (575 yards vs. 337 yards) paid off. Maryland put the hurt on RU with a sharp 40-16 victory. RB Tayon Fleet-Davis had a stellar game for Maryland as he rushed for two TDs and 152 yards on 18 carries.
Two defensive stats to keep an eye on: The Hokies are 171st worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with 18 on the season. The Terrapins have experienced some struggles of their own as they are stumbling into the matchup with the 218th most touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 45 on the season. It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
