Game Recap
The San Jose State Spartans were the 50-37 winners over the UNLV Rebels when they last met in last October. On Saturday? They had no such luck. It was a hard-fought matchup, but SJSU had to settle for a 38-35 loss against UNLV. The Spartans didn't live up to their potential and found themselves falling short of the 7-point advantage oddsmakers thought they had coming into the game.
RB Charles Williams had a stellar game for UNLV as he rushed for 186 yards and three TDs on 27 carries. UNLV also relied on K Daniel Gutierrez, whose 45-yard field goal boot in the third quarter wound up being the difference in the game.
UNLV's defense was a force to be reckoned with, and it collected four interceptions and one fumble. Those interceptions were spread across their defensive unit.
San Jose State's defeat came about despite a quality game from RB DeJon Packer, who picked up 78 yards on the ground on 16 carries and caught five passes for 78 yards. Josh Love's 65-yard touchdown toss to Packer in the third quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the evening.
SJSU will take on the Fresno State Bulldogs at 10:30 p.m. ET next week at CEFCU Stadium. The defensive coordinators surely put in extra hours ahead of this contest since these teams' offenses combined for 1,053 yards this week. As for the Rebels, they will face off against the Nevada Wolf Pack at 3 p.m. ET at Clarence Mackay Stadium. Both of those teams are tiptoeing into their matchup after sneaking past their previous opponents.
