California vs. Stanford: Live updates, score, results, highlights, for Friday's NCAAF game
Live scores, highlights and updates from the California vs. Stanford football game
Game Recap
The California Golden Bears missed a PAT kick in the fourth quarter against the Stanford Cardinal on Friday, and it came back to haunt them. It could have gone either way late during winning time for California or Stanford, but it was the Cardinal snatching the 24-23 victory. California might have entered gameday a little too confident, resting on the laurels of their 24-20 win against Stanford when they previously met last November.
Among those leading the charge for Stanford was RB Austin Jones, who punched in two rushing touchdowns.
Stanford's defense was a presence as well, as it got past the Golden Bears' offensive line to sack QB Chase Garbers four times for a total loss of 24 yards. Leading the way was DE Thomas Schaffer and his two sacks. Those were the first sacks for Schaffer this year.
RB Damien Moore hadn't helped California's cause all that much against the Oregon State Beavers last week, but the same can't be said for this matchup. California's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Moore, who picked up 121 yards on the ground on ten carries, and Garbers, who passed for two TDs and 151 yards on 29 attempts in addition to picking up 51 yards on the ground. Moore's longest run was for 54 yards in the third quarter.
California's overall record fell to 0-3. The win bumped Stanford's record up to 1-2.
The Golden Bears will play host again and welcome the Oregon Ducks to California Memorial Stadium, where kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET next week. California staggers into the contest hobbled by three consecutive losses while Oregon skip in buoyed by four consecutive wins. The Cardinal are staying on the road next week to face off against the Washington Huskies at 3 p.m. ET Dec. 5 at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium.
