The Charlotte 49ers and the Appalachian State Mountaineers will face off at noon ET Sept. 12 at Kidd Brewer Stadium to kick off their 2020 seasons. While the 49ers were not exactly top dog last season, they did wrap up the year with a winning record of 7-6. Meanwhile, Appalachian State ended up 13-1 last year and capped things off with a win over the UAB Blazers in the New Orleans Bowl, so they are on the hunt for another strong season.
A pair of last-season stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: Charlotte ranked 15th worst in the nation with respect to touchdowns allowed last year, where the team gave up 50 (bottom 89%). To make matters even worse for Charlotte, Appalachian State was seventh best in the nation in overall offensive touchdowns, finishing the 2019 season with 65.
The Charlotte sideline is surely aware that they're the underdogs in this one. We'll soon see whether they can make the experts look bad.
