The Appalachian State Mountaineers will take on the Campbell Fighting Camels at noon ET on Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Appalachian State is the favorite here -- although they were the favorites in their last matchup, too, so the odds might count for a little less.
The Mountaineers might not have won anyway, but with 110 yards lost due to penalties, they really shot themselves in the foot last week. It was a hard-fought contest, but they had to settle for a 17-7 loss against the Marshall Thundering Herd. No one had a standout game offensively for Appalachian State, but they got one touchdown from QB Zac Thomas. Thomas' longest connection was to WR Thomas Hennigan for 36 yards in the first quarter.
Meanwhile, the night started off rough for Campbell last Friday, and it ended that way, too. They have to be aching after a bruising 43-21 defeat to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Campbell was surely aware of their 27.5-point disadvantage in the point spread, but the foreknowledge did nothing to prevent the result. A silver lining for them was the play of RB C.J. Freeman, who punched in one rushing touchdown.
This next game looks promising for Appalachian State, who are favored by a full 35.5 points. They may be expected to win, but bettors beware: they are 0-2 against the spread when favored.
With both teams hitting sour notes in their previous games, they will no doubt be looking to produce a better outcome in this one. We'll see which team satisfies their hunger and which team leaves with an empty stomach.
