Top Asa Newell News

  • Hawks' Asa Newell: First double-double of NBA career

Newell totaled 12 points (4-9 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 1-2 FT), 10 rebounds and one assist over 25 minutes during the Hawks' 117-100 loss to the Thunder on Saturday.

Newell didn't play Opening Night against the Raptors and saw the floor for just four minutes during the Hawks' win over the Magic on Friday. However, the rookie first-rounder got extended run Saturday due to the absences of Zaccharie Risacher (ankle), Jalen Johnson (ankle) and Kristaps Porzingis (illness). Newell took advantage of the playing time and showed high energy on the floor as he hauled in seven of the Hawks' 15 offensive rebounds en route to the first double-double of his NBA career. The No. 23 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft could carve out a consistent role for himself amidst a crowded Atlanta frontcourt if he continues to play well off the bench.

  • Hawks' Asa Newell: Scores five in four minutes

Newell logged five points (2-3 FG, 1-1 3Pt) over four minutes during Friday's 111-107 victory over Orlando.

Newell didn't get much time on the floor but made use of it, connecting on two of three field-goal attempts. Despite maximizing his short time in Friday's game, Newell likely won't make much of an impact from a fantasy perspective this season.

  • Hawks' Asa Newell: Returning to bench role

Newell will be deployed off the bench in Thursday's preseason game against the Rockets, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Newell took full advantage of an opportunity to start Monday, totaling 19 points, eight boards, two assists, two steals and two blocks in 36 minutes. However, he'll retreat to his usual role Thursday with most of Atlanta's usual starting five back in action.

  • Hawks' Asa Newell: Elite two-way performance

Newell compiled 19 points (7-18 FG, 0-6 3Pt, 5-9 FT), eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in 36 minutes during Monday's preseason win over the Heat.

Newell was fantastic in the win, putting up numbers on both ends of the floor. He flashed tremendous defensive upside while showing some nice aggression on the offensive end. While his shooting remains an issue, Newell is an interesting prospect. Taken with the 23rd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Hawks are positioned to be able to bring him along slowly this season. This won't allow his skill set to translate to fantasy value, but he is certainly a name to monitor moving forward.

  • Hawks' Asa Newell: Will start Monday

Newell will start Monday's preseason game against the Heat, Kevin Chouinard of the Hawks' official site reports.

With Atlanta resting most of its regulars, Newell will make his first start in an NBA preseason game. He'll be joined in the first unit by Jacob Toppin, N'Faly Dante, Vit Krejci and Keaton Wallace.

  • Hawks' Asa Newell: Resting Sunday

Newell (rest) won't play in Sunday's Summer League game against the Celtics, Brad Rowland of the Locked On Podcast Network reports.

The No. 23 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Newell will sit out the squad's final Summer League game. He appeared in four outings this summer, during which he averaged 13.5 points and 8.2 rebounds while shooting 51.3 percent from the field in 24.9 minutes per game.

  • Hawks' Asa Newell: Stays sharp in Summer League

Newell registered 14 points (6-12 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-6 FT), eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks across 24 minutes during Thursday's 92-88 Summer League win over the Grizzlies.

Newell posted a solid shooting performance and contributed across the board, especially with his contributions on the defensive end. He's now put up 14 points in back-to-back Summer League performances and continues to prove that he belongs in Atlanta's rotation.

  • Hawks' Asa Newell: Double-doubles in SL win

Newell notched 18 points (7-9 FG, 4-5 3Pt, 0-2 FT), 11 rebounds and one block across 26 minutes in Sunday's 98-80 Summer League win over the Suns.

The No. 23 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Newell delivered an efficient performance en route to game-high marks in points, three-pointers and rebounds. Through two Summer League appearances, Newell has averaged 13.0 points and 9.5 rebounds across 26.0 minutes per game. The Georgia standout averaged 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals across 29.0 minutes per game in 33 outings during his lone collegiate season.

  • Hawks' Asa Newell: Drafted by Hawks

Newell was selected by the Hawks with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Newell lands at Atlanta as part of an earlier trade in the draft with the Pelicans, one that allowed New Orleans to select Derik Queen with the 13th overall pick. The deal also fetched the Hawks an unprotected first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Newell showed glimpses of his quality during his lone season at Georgia, averaging 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game as a freshman. Newell should add depth in the frontcourt for the Hawks. However, he's not expected to have a lot of minutes at his disposal in a frontcourt that should feature Jalen Johnson (shoulder), Kristaps Porzingis and Onyeka Okongwu, just to mention a few. Don't expect Newell to make a significant impact in fantasy as a rookie.
