Top Mariners News

  • Mariners' Eduard Bazardo: Excellent stretch continues

Bazardo threw a scoreless eighth inning Saturday against the Athletics, allowing no hits and one walk with no strikeouts.

That's now seven consecutive scoreless appearances for Bazardo, who's given up just three runs over his past 16 outings. The right-hander has been very effective out of Seattle's bullpen since the start of June, turning in a 1.73 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 38:14 K:BB across his last 36.1 innings.

  • Mariners' Victor Robles: Snags steal in return

Robles went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Athletics.

Robles saw his first big-league action since April 6, making his return from a shoulder fracture. He was off to a hot start at the plate prior to the injury, but he likely won't have much time to build momentum in the near future, as he's still facing a 10-game suspension for throwing his bat at a pitcher during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. Robles can continue to play until MLB rules on his appeal, and he figures to see time in right field while Dominic Canzone (arm) is bothered by an injury. Should Robles' suspension begin before Canzone is healthy, Luke Raley would be next in line for playing time in the corner outfield.

  • Mariners' Randy Arozarena: Provides lone run in win

Arozarena went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Athletics.

Arozarena hit his first homer since Aug. 7 versus the White Sox. He's been a bit spotty at the plate lately, going just 3-for-29 across his last seven games, though two of those knocks have gone for extra bases. On the year, Arozarena is up to 24 homers, 60 RBI, 75 runs scored, 24 stolen bases and a .238/.338/.443 slash line across 128 games.

  • Mariners' George Kirby: Rebounds with quality start

Kirby allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Saturday.

Kirby struggled against the Mets in the Little League Classic last weekend, but he rebounded well with a quality start in this outing. His usually impeccable control hasn't been present lately -- Kirby has walked multiple batters in six of his last eight starts, though he's still turned in five quality starts in that span. For the season, he's at a 4.05 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 97:26 K:BB through 95.2 innings over 17 starts. He's projected to make his next start at Cleveland.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Out again Saturday

Canzone (arm) is not in the starting lineup against the Athletics on Saturday.

Canzone hasn't played since Monday, when he was removed from a game against Philadelphia after being hit by a pitch on his left arm. The outfielder had X-rays taken, which came back negative, but it's unclear when he'll be ready to play again. When he is healthy enough to be in the lineup, Canzone could face a challenge to his playing time from Victor Robles, who was activated off the 60-day IL on Saturday.

  • Mariners' Dylan Moore: DFA'd by Seattle on Saturday

The Mariners designated Moore for assignment Saturday.

Moore had a great start to the season, batting .295 with six homers, 11 RBI and seven stolen bases over his first 25 games. However, he's fizzled considerably since and batted a miserly .045 (3-for-67) with a 51.4 percent strikeout rate over his past 47 contests dating back to May 27. Seattle has thus elected to remove Moore from the 40-man roster in order to make room for Victor Robles (shoulder), who was activated off the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Mariners' Victor Robles: Activated off IL, suspension looms

Seattle activated Robles (shoulder) off the 60-day injured list Saturday.

Robles had been on the shelf since early April due to a small fracture in the humeral head of his left shoulder. He has been rehabbing with Triple-A Tacoma and batted .310 with a home run, nine RBI and two stolen bases during the eight-game rehab stint. While Robles has now been activated off the IL, he's still facing a 10-game suspension for throwing his bat toward a pitcher during the rehab assignment; however, because Robles' appeal hasn't yet been ruled on by MLB, Robles is able to play and is expected to be in Seattle's lineup against the Athletics on Saturday, per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times. Dylan Moore was designated for assignment Saturday to make room for Robles on the 26-man and 40-man rosters.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Connects for homer in win

Polanco went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 3-2 win over the Athletics.

Polanco snapped a 12-game homerless drought in the seventh inning. During that span, he went 7-for-44 (.159) with one double, three RBI and 15 strikeouts. Polanco has struggled with consistency throughout much of the season with a handful of lengthy slumps on his ledger. He's at a .246/.310/.445 slash line with 19 homers, 55 RBI, 45 runs scored and five stolen bases across 107 contests.

  • Mariners' Josh Naylor: Clubs homer Friday

Naylor went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 3-2 win over the Athletics.

Naylor delivered a go-ahead solo shot in the seventh inning. Prior to Friday, Naylor had gone just 1-for-19 with six strikeouts over his previous six games, and he hadn't homered since Aug. 10 versus the Rays. The first baseman is up to 16 long balls, 70 RBI, 62 runs scored, 22 stolen bases and a .282/.346/.450 slash line through 118 contests. He's been consistently strong at T-Mobile Park and should benefit from facing a weak pitching staff in this weekend's series versus the Athletics.

  • Mariners' Eugenio Suarez: Reaches 40-homer mark

Suarez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 3-2 win over the Athletics.

Suarez reached the 40-homer mark for the second time in his career when he went yard in the fifth inning. The third baseman's return to Seattle started off slow, but he's picked up the pace lately, hitting safely in eight of the last nine games. He's 10-for-34 (.294) with three homers in that time, though this was his first home game in that span. Suarez has a .238/.306/.548 slash line with 98 RBI, 74 runs scored, three stolen bases and 23 doubles over 126 games between the Mariners and Diamondbacks this year. He'll need to stay dialed in with his power to take a run at reaching the 50-homer mark for the first time.

  • Mariners' Andres Munoz: Sloppy in 30th save

Munoz allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out two over one inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-2 win over the Athletics.

Munoz gave up three straight one-out singles to bring in a run, and then loaded the bases with a walk. He was able to get the last two outs, but this was far from a pretty effort from the Seattle closer. He's given up two runs on seven hits and six walks while striking out nine over eight innings in August, picking up six saves in his eight appearances. Munoz is at a 1.47 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 63:24 K:BB through 49 innings this season. He reached the 30-save mark for the first time in his career by closing out Friday's game.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Sharp in win over A's

Woo (11-7) allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings to earn the win Friday over the Athletics.

Woo gave up a solo shot to Brent Rooker in the first inning, but that was the extent of the damage. Woo followed that with 6.1 no-hit innings in one of the most dominant starts in an already impressive campaign. The 25-year-old has surrendered just six runs over 26 innings across his four starts in August. Overall, he's at a 2.94 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 160:30 K:BB through 159 innings over 25 starts. The right-hander is projected for a tough home start versus the Padres next week.

  • Mariners' Ryan Bliss: Nearing rehab assignment

Bliss (biceps) could begin a rehab assignment as early as next week, Zac Hereth of SeattleSports.com reports.

The Mariners plan for Bliss to get 40-to-50 at-bats in the minors before activating him from the 60-day injured list. The 25-year-old second baseman appears to be ahead of schedule in his recovery from a left biceps tear that's kept him on the shelf since early April, and a return at some point in mid-September isn't out of the question. Once he's cleared to rejoin Seattle, the righty-hitting Bliss figures to work on the short side of a platoon with the lefty-hitting Cole Young at the keystone.

  • Mariners' Logan Evans: Expected to start throwing soon

Evans had a cortisone shot in his elbow recently and is scheduled to resume throwing in the next couple of days, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reported Friday.

Evans was placed on the injured list Aug. 15 with inflammation in his right elbow, and he received a cortisone shot to address the inflammation. He's close to resuming his throwing progression, but it's unclear how far behind he fell during the shutdown period. Evans shouldn't be expected back until September.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Aiming for mid-September return

Santos (knee) is expected to begin a rehab assignment soon and is hopeful to return in mid-September, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports.

Santos has been sidelined since late April with a knee injury that required surgery. The 25-year-old is getting close to pitching in games, but he'll require a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment before being activated from the 60-day injured list. Santos has a 5.14 ERA in seven big-league innings this season.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Sitting Friday

Canzone (arm) is not in the Mariners' starting lineup against the Athletics on Friday.

Canzone has been out of the lineup since being removed from Monday's game against the Phillies after being struck by a pitch on his left arm. X-rays did not reveal any structural damage, but he'll be on the bench for Friday's series opener while Luke Raley starts in right field and bats seventh.
