Fantasy NHL: Top 5 Weekly Boom and Bust Players

Our goal with this analysis is to not only tell you who the best players will be, but also tell you who most frequently exceeds their overall rank (boom players) and who comes up short the most frequently (weekly bust). This is a season review of players who, when healthy, delivered boom weeks at a high rate and / or have been big busts that should have been benched. To determine if a player had a boom week we take that player's rank for the week and see if it is numerically 50% of his overall weekly average. A player who averages to be the 50th best player at his position would need to finish the week Top 25 to qualify. To qualify as a bust week, it has to be one where the weekly ranking is 50% higher than the normal average. So a Top 20 player finishing 30th or worse.

The center with the highest boom rate is Aleksander Barkov whose per week average rank was #36. He had 12 weeks out of 25 where he delivered a big performance. Another player with a high boom rate is Mikko Rantanen who leads the wing position. Mikko Koskinen, in an average week, is the #28 goalie but he also has the highest bust rate at the position. In his 25 weeks, 9 were bad, busts. Players like Logan Couture and John Gibson are two of 4 players below who appear in both the boom and bust lists. These are the players who you'll want to carefully manage in terms of when to best start or sit because they rarely deliver an 'average' performance. The table below shows the player with the five highest boom and bust rates. The rank is based on the player's average position rank per week and not their season total fantasy points.
